Roger Barthmaier Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 5, 2024.
Roger Francis Barthmaier passed after a long illness on December 23, 2023, surrounded by family at his residence in Freeport, ME. Born in Bryn Mawr, PA to the late Jack and Jeannette Barthmaier, he was the firstborn in a family of 4 siblings. He grew up in Drexel Hill, PA, and attended St. Dorothy's Parrish School and Upper Darby High School.

Roger was a registered financial professional and started his successful career in finance in 1970 at Cannon & Company. He worked at several prestigious Philadelphia financial institutions, including Renneisen, Renneisen, and Redfield; Butcher and Singer; and Rutherford, Brown, and Catherwood before retiring from Beonning & Scattergood in 2012.

He married Elizabeth (Bonnie) Mary Barthmaier (nee Elizabeth Schlotterback) on June 9th, 1973 after being introduced through childhood friends. They honeymooned in Bar Harbor, Maine, and frequently returned to their favorite state on family vacations. They lived and raised four children in Doylestown, PA before moving to Glenside, PA, Wilmington, NY, and finally Freeport, ME. Roger was active in local Democratic politics and enjoyed working with children as a coach and umpire for local soccer and baseball organizations. He was an active member of the Doylestown Country Club and spent many weekends playing golf or watching it on television. Once retired he moved to Freeport, building a comfortable home in the coastal woods.

He was a private man, but very friendly and would chat with everyone he met. He was devoted to family and especially proud of his accomplished children and "above average" grandchildren. He was often seen sporting their academic swag to prove his loyalty to higher education. He will always be remembered for his large trays of Stouffer's lasagna "Sunday Night Dinners," wicked golf swing, remarkable memory for facts and trivia, and quiet generosity. He could perform complicated long division in his head but struggled with a TV remote. He was a voice of reason, never claimed to know it all, but always had "All the Answers." His family was grateful for his sound advice. He was an honest and genuinely good person, a devoted husband, and a dedicated father. He will be dearly missed.

Roger was preceded in death by his son, Johnathan (J.B.) Barthmaier, and survived by his wife, three daughters, and their remarkable families: Jennifer and David Lacy, Noah, Emmett, Nat and Vera (Erdenheim, PA); Betsy and Karl Cyr, Jack and Emmeline (North Yarmouth, ME); Johanna and Brian Payne, Westly and Beatrix (Warren, RI).

In place of flowers, donations can be made in Roger's name to Beacon Hospice in Portland, Maine. Attn: 52 Atlantic Place, South Portland, ME 04106  207-772-0929.

We were thankful to be invited to this past Thanksgiving dinner at the Barthmaiers and were able to visit with Roger and Bonnie. While he may have been moving a bit slower, Roger was his usual jovial and talkative self.

The Roger we knew loved to talk. With vodka and cigarette in hand, he would regale us with his stories about Philadelphia, grandkids, Maine, golf, and of course, politics and current events. It was fun to prod him a bit with certain current topics that would get him particularly animated.

I am sure that the success of his family and grandchildren were a comfort to him. We wish all the best to the family.
