JEWELL RIDGE, Va. — Mr. Roger Lee Keene, age 67, of the Bearwallow section of Jewell Ridge, Va., passed away Saturday, March 28, 2009 in a Welch, W.Va. hospital. He was born in Jolo, W.Va. and was the son of Myrtle Cooper Varney of Shortts Gap, Va. and the late Albert Buskil Keene. He had made his home in the Florida area most of his life and was currently working for Newhall Contracting. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed farming, hunting, and playing with his grandchildren. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one brother and one sister. Survivors, in addition to his mother, are: His wife of 47 years, Grendia Keene; two daughters, Shawn Marie Keene and fiancé, Kevin Perry of San Mateo, Fla., Violet Clark of Jacksonville, Fla.; two sons, Jeffrey David Keene of Jewell Ridge, Va., Buskel Zane Keene and wife, Miracle of Jewell Ridge, Va.; four sisters, Martha Allen and husband, Sam of Bridgeton, N.J., Juanita Wimmer of Jewell Ridge, Va., Penny Compton and husband, Johnny of Shortts Gap, Va., Gaynell Adkins of Pound, Va.; three brothers, Troy Keene and wife, Janice of Pea Patch, Va., Harold D. Keene and wife, Betty of Florahome, Fla., Richard Cooper of Lakeland, Fla.; five grandchildren, Ramey Jordan Allen, Wyatt Cole Marx, Perry Lee Keene, Cecil James Keene, and Emily Robin Keene; and three step grandchildren also survive. Funeral services for Roger Lee Keen will be conducted Thursday, April 2, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, Va. with the Rev. Hobart Kennedy, the Rev. Dennis Wimmer, and the Rev. Clarence Herron officiating. Interment will follow at the White Family Cemetery on White Mountain near Jewell Ridge, Va. Nephews and his niece will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Noah Phipps, Richard Phipps, Johnny Proffitt, Stevie White, and Danny Mullins.
