Roger Lowe Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 6, 2016.
Roger Charles Lowe, Sr., 69, of Rome, GA, passed away at a local hospital on Monday, Dec. 5, 2016. He had been battling complications from pneumonia.

Roger was a longtime soccer and football coach as well as a teacher in the Cartersville City School System.

Roger was born to the late Hubert C. Lowe and Josephine Ryder Lowe on March 28, 1947 in Rome. He is a 1965 graduate of Darlington School and a 1969 graduate of the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity.

In 1970, Roger first began teaching at Canon Elementary School in Franklin County, GA. Upon returning to Rome, he opened Lowe's Supermarket #3 in Armuchee, GA. In 1977, Roger left the family grocery business and began a 35-year teaching and coaching career in the Cartersville City School System. Roger started the boys soccer program at Cartersville High School and continued to coach the girls and boys teams after retiring in 2011. He was a talented and inspiring teacher and coach who made an eternal impact on the lives of his students and athletes. Roger was instrumental in bringing recreational soccer to Rome and helped to start the YMCA Youth Soccer Program in 1973.

Roger was a member of the Movement for One Community United, whose mission is to bring people together to build a community of harmony and peace. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church of Rome and the Koinonia Sunday School. Roger served the Lord in mission at La Iglesia Dios Es Amor in Costa Rica. After spending time there with his brothers and sisters in Christ, his prayer became that people would experience a more joy-filled relationship with God through prayer.

Roger's connection to people knew no boundaries or conditions, nor did his ability to enjoy life. His journey was full and his smile was joy. While words can never suffice in describing the comfortably unique person that Roger was, he leaves an amazing legacy that will continue to speak volumes of a life well lived.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 47 1/2 "glorious" years, Kay Wolf Lowe of Rome, and his sister and brother-in-law, Patsy and Dick Johnston of Bald Head Island, NC. His children and their spouses also celebrate his life-Heather and Kelly McDurmon of Rome, Jenifer and Kevin Thoem of Wilmette, IL, Tripp and Christy Lowe of Athens, GA, and Cris Lowe of Richmond, VA. Roger's nine grandchildren will also hold to the memory of their "Pampa"-Ansley, Anne Marie, Rhett, and Luke McDurmon; Morgan, Maggie, and Ethan Thoem; and Baylee and Brennan Lowe- as will his nieces and a nephew-Leslie Johnston Tinsley of Wilmington, NC, Laura Johnston Hill of Raleigh, NC, and Rich Johnston of Asheville, NC, his uncle Lewis Lowe of Rome and cousins Mike Jenkins of Rome and Steve Randall of Issaquah, WA.

A celebration of Roger's life was held at Trinity United Methodist Church on Sunday, December 18, 2016, at 3:00 P.M., 606 at Turner McCall Blvd, Rome, GA, 30165. The family received friends at the church from 1:00 P.M. until the service. Please visit Daniel's Funeral Home website at www.daniles-funeralhome.com to share memories and post tributes.

Roger was genuine, thoughtful and compassionate. I worked for his father in my high school years at the original Lowe's on North Broad, and have fond memories of those days, especially when Roger was home from UT working in the store. Not surprised at what a wonderful life he lived, the family he loved, nor how he inspired young men and women in both his church and sports. My condolences to the Lowe family. C. Ronald "Ronnie" Johnston (Braselton, GA).

You gave me my first locker combo.
You taught me how to kick a field goal, despite being a girl.
As one of my classmates said to me today, you"molded our lives," AND YOU DID!
As a teacher, coach, role model, encourager, supporter, motivator & friend...I miss u.
Fly high Coach Lowe , until we meet again. Ill make sure I bring some notes for u to hide behind ur chalkboard in heaven.

Roger was a fellow teacher and coach and a dear friend. I was saddened to hear of his passing. Roger practiced soccer adjacent to where I was practicing baseball. He was a joy to be around, always positive and always supportive. We will be missed.

My first memory of Roger was when he was about 10 years old, working in his dad's grocery store on North Broad. He had on an apron that almost touched the floor but stayed busy working throughout the store. He learned a strong work ethic from a young age through his early experiences.

Roger was a quiet, gentle and caring person. His convictions were strong and he always took up for those who needed a boost with encouraging words. The world is a better place because of his presence and service. He will be missed but his legacy will forever be with us.

It was a blessing to know Roger. He and I met at Darlington in 1958 and I got to see him most recently at the October 2015 alumni reunion. Our prayers go out to his loved ones. May the Lord bless you with recollections of the good times and anticipation of the good time to come, at Home with Him.

Kay
I have fond memories of Roger. He was always smiling and laughing...though, serious about his soccer. The many nights of Rome vs. Cartersville with our husbands on opposite sidelines fighting to win, but still friends.
He impacted many lives with his gentle and kind spirit, his sportsmanship and his dedication to whatever he did. I will dearly miss seeing him at Swift and Finch as he drank coffee, and read yesterday's news. Praying for God's peace through this tough season. Our loss is a win for heaven.
