OSTERVILLE — Roger Wellington, of Osterville and Westwood, died on April 13, 2009, in Westwood.

He is survived by his beloved wife of almost 70 years, Violet Heath Wellington; and four sons, Roger Underwood Wellington Jr. and his wife Elise, David Heath Wellington and his former wife Carol, Charles Oliver Wellington II and his deceased wife Nancy, and Jeffrey Alden Wellington and his wife Susan; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He also leaves three sisters, Florence Haase, Patricia Barron, and Nancy Lee; and many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Wellington was born in 1915 in Belmont, where his ancestors were early settlers. He was educated at Belmont Hill School, Phillips Academy Andover, Harvard College (Class of 1937), and Harvard Business School (Class of 1939). Serving in World War II from 1942 to 1946, he was commanding officer of the USS SC-508 and the PC 1257, which saw active duty in the Mediterranean and Pacific theaters. He retired from the Navy as a lieutenant commander in the USNR.

Mr. Wellington began his career as a CPA in New York City in 1939 and, after the war, resumed it as a general partner with Scovell, Wellington & Co. in Boston and Coopers & Lybrand after the firms merged in 1962. He served on the Council of CPAs from 1965-1971 and was chairman of the Massachusetts Society of CPAs from 1971-1973. As president of Acme Drainage District in Florida, he was instrumental in developing the town of Wellington.

He served on the boards of directors of the William Underwood Co. and its subsidiaries, Burnham & Morill and Shippam Ltd. He also served as director of Bay State Gas Co., Brookstone Co., and Schaefer Marine Co.; treasurer of the Harvard Club of Boston, Newton-Wellesley Hospital, and The Country Club in Brookline; and president of the Wianno Club in Osterville. He was active in many other civic organizations.

Roger loved his family and friends, and enjoyed music, dancing, tennis, golf and bridge with all of them. He lived a long and fulfilling life with the people he cared for most. As a valentine he received recently from one of his sons read, "Dad was the guy who kept his family loved and looked after without fanfare and without fail."

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 30, at 11 a.m. at St. Peter's Church, Wianno Avenue, Osterville.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to a charity of one's choice.
