Ronald Brown Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Feb. 13 to Feb. 14, 2023.
Ronald A. Brown February 9, 2023 Dr. Ronald A. Brown, 86, passed away peacefully on February 9, 2023 at Oswego Hospital surrounded by his family. Ron was predeceased by his beloved wife Miriam A. Brown to whom he was married for 44 years, and by his sister Joan Brown. He is survived by his daughter Rachel Brown of Cicero, NY, his sons David (Yvonne) Brown and Joshua Brown of Oswego, NY, and his three granddaughters, Sarah Brown, Hannah Brown, and Keara Brown who all knew him as Zaida. Ron was born in Cleveland, Ohio to the late Leon and Ann Brown, but he grew up in downtown Philadelphia, PA where he attended the prestigious Central High School. He attended the University of Pennsylvania as a music major before changing to a career in physics. Ron earned a bachelor's degree from Drexel University and a Master's and PhD in physics from Purdue University. He started his teaching career as a professor at M.I.T and Kent State University before becoming a Professor at SUNY Oswego where he taught for over 30 years. Ron's mission was to make physics fun, and to teach elementary and secondary teachers how to teach science to their students. He developed his own physics courses for non-majors, and continued his work during summer institutes attended by schoolteachers. He made physics fun and interesting by using interactive demonstrations including his famous egg drop. His students enjoyed his classes, which were always full, and they continued to be in touch with him throughout the years no matter where they were in the world. Ron won the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1974, and continued to publish articles for science periodicals well into his 80's focusing on women in science and the science of ancient cultures. Ron had many interests including reading and music. He played the piano almost daily for most of his life, and the sounds of him playing ragtime on the piano could be heard throughout the house. Ron was an avid reader of everything from Sherlock Holmes to Star Trek, poetry and anything related to science. He spread his interest in literacy by gifting books, especially for children, and late in life he wrote and published several children's books. He was a prolific joke teller, and everywhere he went he was ready to share a joke, and people who knew him would run up to him and ask him for one. He wrote a joke book a few years ago that he has since shared with 100's of people, including donating them to nursing homes, bringing everyone joy. Ron's gentle nature, big smile, intelligence, sense of humor, and kindness will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. We knew the Browns not as a teacher but as parents of children near our childrens ages. They gifted me with a visit and audio books when I had serious eye surgery. God made Ron a gift to all that knew him here on earth

I first met Dr. Brown in 1981 when I became a physics major at Oswego State College. He was a wonderful teacher with a cheerful disposition, always trying to pique our interest in the topic at hand. I spent a lot of out of class time with him during my years at the college, especially time during his lunch break while he ate his daily bagel. Man, he loved those bagels! After I graduated, I flew off into the wild blue yonder continuing in my military career, but always keeping him posted about my adventures in life. Dr. Brown was not just my favorite teacher, he was my friend; he was my wife's friend; and he was an Uncle—Uncle Ron—to my two daughters, Ashley and Amber. We love him and will miss him greatly, but we have great hope that the Almighty has brought him into paradise, reunited him with his beloved Miriam, and that He will bring us all together once again as we rejoice in heaven.

Ronald's passion for his work helped others who were not scientifically inclined to appreciate Physics. I enjoyed reading some of his articles intended for non-specialists. They were so well-written and easy to understand. I enjoyed conversations with Ron and Miriam after temple services in Owego. I miss those days!

Ron was a good friend to us and our four children; and a trusted work colleague (he in Physics, and I in Chem). He often stopped by our house to present his latest Physics demos & Jokes to our children thru the '80's & '90's. Ron and I shared similar interests in music; especially player pianos. Ron was often ahead of the "curve", as he lectured, wrote articles, and helped/encouraged women and others to enter sciences, engineering, etc.; long before STEM programs were developed. He was a very benevolent presence on campus. I loved that he always tried to make sure women scientists were properly recognized. A real loss to the world.

Ron was one of the very good guys at the college. I enjoyed our regular conversations in the halls of Snygg, our swapping of jokes. Condolences to the family - Ron will be missed.

My prayers are with the family. Ron was a good man that I will miss. He was kind, thoughtful and one of the smartest people I was fortunate enough to know. I am proud to be able to call him a friend.
