Ronald Johnson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 23, 2025.
Ronald Gregory Johnson, (67) of Viera, Florida passed away on August 5th, 2025. He is survived and missed by his loving wife Joyce (née Smyke) of 42 years; his son Ronald Christopher; also remembered by Jennifer Kelly, significant other of his son Ronald; his mother Placida Ann (Bagdon) Johnson; and his two sisters Catherine Gorrill (Ralph) and Elizabeth Pillion (Charles). Loving uncle and friend to many. He was preceded in death by his late father, Ronald Gerald Johnson.

Born on September 5th, 1957, at Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base in Oceanside, California, Ron spent his early years with his family moving throughout Southern California before settling in Anaheim. The coastal lifestyle shaped his lifelong love for the ocean, sunshine, and a free-spirited way of living. He could often be found surfing, skateboarding (instead of driving), and enjoying his love of music.

Ron met the love of his life, Joyce Smyke, at a gathering with friends. Though she was only visiting California, their connection was instant and profound. They both agreed "that it felt like they were meant to be with each other". Joyce moved across the country to be with him, and in 1989, they married surrounded by loved ones. In 1992, they welcomed their only child, Ronald ("Ronnie"), continuing a cherished family tradition of namesakes. Together, they journeyed across the country before settling in Florida.

Throughout his life, Ron held many roles, each marked by dedication and pride. He co-founded a bricklaying company in Southern California, often pointing out homes on TV where he had personally installed entryways or steps. His career in the lumber/truss industry began with a school field trip and blossomed into a lifelong profession, eventually leading him to become General Manager at a truss company in Clermont, Florida.

In 2008, seeking a change during the recession, Ron found joy working at a marina in Cape Canaveral, reconnecting with his love for the water. Known affectionately as "Captain Ron," he later transitioned to the Port Authority at Cape Canaveral, where he worked for five years. There, he thrived as a mentor and leader, often jokingly referring to himself as a "people herder." He reluctantly retired in the fall of 2024 and was able to spend quality time with his friends and family during his final months.

Ron was a man of quiet strength and unwavering devotion. He worked tirelessly to provide for his family, ensuring Joyce could stay home to raise Ronnie. Despite long hours, he always made time for those he loved. His sacrifices were driven by love, and with their support, he overcame every challenge.

He will be remembered for his captivating stories, his deep appreciation for nature, and the stunning photographs he took along the river. His unique aura touched everyone he met. Weekends at the beach were sacred-whether the waves were high or the ocean was calm, it was his happy place. There, he taught Ronnie and his friends, Kevin Kennedy and Chris Daniels, to surf, passing down his love for the ocean.

Ron was more than a husband and father-he was a mentor, a leader, and most of all a best friend. His legacy reminds us that life is short and should be lived fully. He did just that-his way.

Please join us in honoring Ron's life on Sunday, August 31st, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 8:30 PM at Marker 24 Riverfront Grille, located at 1360 S. Banana River Drive, Merritt Island, FL 32952. Family and friends are welcome to gather, share memories, and celebrate the life of a beloved husband, father, and friend.

Had the pleasure of working with Ron at the port. He was an amazing person and had lots of fascinating stories. I will miss him very much as I did since I left Florida. RIP buddy.

My name is Emily and I am a niece of Ron Johnson. My mom is Catherine, which is one of Rons´ sisters. I never got to spend much time with him as an adult but the time we spent together when I was young meant a lot. He was always the "cool- surfer uncle" which I told everyone I had. Last November was his Mom´s, my Grandmas, 90th birthday party and I hosted it at my home in Southern California. Uncle Ron, Aunt Joyce, Cousin Ronnie and Jen were able to make it out for the fiesta! I was so happy and excited to be around all of them. This is one of the pictures I will always cherish and have to remember my Uncle.

Was very sad the hear of Ron's passing. I had the pleasure of knowing and working with Ron at Port Canaveral. He was a Terminal Lead for our department. You could alway count on Ron. And yes, he was good at herding people.
Rest in peace brother!

Ron was a great human being, straight to the point, kind, giving and respectful. I had the pleasure of working with him at Port Canaveral where we chatted about work life, personal life and the lives we hoped to have down the road. He shared his life lessons with me and always cheered me on to help make things better for our department. Hearing about his passing today truly hurt my heart and I pray for his friends and family during this difficult time. God Bless Ron! We´ll see each other again my friend.
