Roy Osborne Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 2, 2015.
December 28, 1922 - September 29, 2015
Roy F. Osborne, Jr. was born to Roy Franklin and Nonie Osborne on December 28, 1922 in Nashville, Tennessee. He began preaching the week of his 17th birthday in 1939. He was married to Nova Dene Potts from 1947 until her death in 1981, and they raised four children together.

Roy attended David Lipscomb College, Abilene Christian College, and the University of Denver, receiving his degree from the University of California at Berkeley where he did both undergraduate and post-graduate studies in clinical psychology. He served in the Army Air Corps in World War II, and in the Air Force during the Korean conflict. Roy served as the regular pulpit minister for congregations in Central Florida, Denver, Colorado, San Leandro and San Francisco, California, and finally, San Antonio, Texas, where he retired in 1991 after 21 years as the senior minister for The Sunset Ridge Church of Christ.

During his time in San Francisco, he also taught at San Quentin Prison for six years, and served on, then, Governor Ronald Reagan's committee on drug abuse and rehabilitation. Roy served on the development Boards for the Baxter School in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, the Austin Graduate School of Theology in Austin, Texas, and Pepperdine University. He was the recipient of the Distinguished Christian Service Award from Pepperdine University in 1992.

During his 70 years of preaching, Roy held gospel meetings in almost every state of the Union, and taught in Central America and Europe. He is the author of the book, "From the Mountain to the Cross", originally published in the series called "Great Preachers of Today". He continued preaching, teaching, and publishing essays on biblical themes reaching hundreds of subscribers in 31 states, the District of Columbia and several foreign countries until the time of his death.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his only brother, Don; his oldest son, Mike; and his wife, Dene. Roy is survived by his son, Don Osborne and his wife, Judy of New Braunfels, Texas; daughter, Victoria Dene Berman and her husband, Henry of Discovery Bay, California; son, Barry Osborne of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; daughter-in-law, Diane Osborne of New Braunfels; and his companion of over 20 years, Margaret Preston of San Antonio. In addition to his three children, Roy leaves nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

The family will receive friends in the main sanctuary on Saturday, October 3, 2015 at Sunset Ridge Church of Christ, 95 Brees Blvd, from 2:00 pm to 3:00pm, while Roy lies in state in the chapel.

I have appreciated Roy since the late 1960s when I heard a tape of his lectures at Pepperdine on Balance in Christianity. I heard him several times in meetings in Nashville. Before I married, I had my wife-to-be listen to all of his tapes. We have enjoyed many of his Osbornisms like "Act, don't react" and "Mister,do you tie shoes?" He was a great preacher and servant of the Lord. Our sympathies to the family there.

In 1974, I had the privilege of working for Roy as his secretary at Sunset Ridge Church of Christ. I quickly learned that he was a devoted husband and father, but most of all he was a true Christian. He was loved and respected and many church members came to him for advice. He traveled often and people looked forward to hearing him preach or hold meetings. He was a gift to us from God.

I met Mr. Osborne at the hearing center almost 5 years ago. His wonderful smile and kind words always brightened my day. I will truly miss him. My prayers are for all who loved him. ----- SA Hearing/A&B Hearing -- Linda

I have loved Roy Osborne since I was a very young child. His simple messages of love and acceptance were greatly appreciated by young and old alike. He was a great man of God.

Forty years ago next month, Roy married us in his library at Sunset Ridge, the church where my sister, Sharon Kay, worked, and where she and Leonard are members. True to his calling, he offered us advice. He told us that, as a young married couple, he and his wife decided they would have their life, their style, their way. And if that meant eating cake for breakfast, well, they do just that. I also remember watching Roy play pool with my father at Sharon Kay and Leonard's home. Neither of them liked to lose. But on his journey right now, there are no losers. Godspeed, Roy. Ellen Warthoe/Blake Hardy, Fort Worth
