Atascadero resident, Ruby Pearl Mapes, 86, was born in rural Haskell County Texas to Jesse and Myrtle Adams in September 1924, and passed away Monday, May 23, 2011, in Visalia, Calif., surrounded by her family. Ruby grew up and attended school in Haskell County Texas. She married the love of her life, James A. Mapes, and moved to California in 1944 with their daughter, Mary. Two more children were born in California, Melinda and Larry. Ruby spent most of her adult life in Morro Bay and Atascadero. She loved the Lord and was a longtime Sunday school teacher and had a great deal of influence on a lot of young lives. She loved to walk on the beach, read, drink coffee, work in her garden and play baseball with the grandkids - all six of them. She was just getting to know her eight great-grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Ruby is survived by her daughter, Mary Barrett (Lewis); son, Larry (Ruth) Mapes, all of Visalia; sister, Jean of Littlefield, Texas; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim; and daughter, Melinda Kennedy. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m., Wednesday, May 25, 2011, at the Atascadero District Cemetery in Atascadero. Oh, Ma, you are so missed. I am however grateful that you are in heaven, reunited with your greatest love. Tell Pa I still won't 'sell that horse to him'! I wish I would have known about the services on Wednesday, before today (Friday). I would have been there to celebrate your straight forward views of life that had so much influence on my own. Ruby was one of the greatest women I will ever know. She was always there for our family in so many ways and influenced us in such a positive, loving way. We loved her so much and have missed her presence in our lives for the past few years. I truly hope she knew how much we cared and what she meant to us.
