Russell Hopkins Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Dec. 4 to Dec. 5, 2022.
Russell George Hopkins 86, passed away peacefully supported by his family at Good Sheppard Hospital in Barrington, Ilinois on November 22nd 2022. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents Russell Hughes Hopkins and Helen (Berry) Hopkins. He is survived and will be dearly missed by his children, Michael Hopkins, Suzanne Hopkins, Mark Hopkins and his 7 Grandchildren Evan, Ryan, Alexandra, Brock, John, Kyle, Emylee and Great Grandchildren Louis and William. He is survived by his beloved Partner Lillian Sorensen.

Russell graduated from St. George High School in Evanston. Russ was an accomplished student who graduated Magna Cum Laude From University of Notre Dame (58') and then endeavored to earn his MBA at Michigan State University. He also attended Syracuse University for a degree in Marketing. Russ was also an Army Veteran (7th Army) who served in Germany for several years as a Medic. He went on to have a lengthy career working for National Beer Wholesaler's Association (NBWA) and spent his working life in the Beverage Industry specializing in Association management and marketing.

During his life, Russ selflessly and tirelessly volunteered in community initiatives and enjoyed helping those in need wherever he could. In his retirement years he worked on many State and Federal projects to support Veteran causes. He was particularly proud of his involvement in the "Blue Star Families" organization where he helped bring awareness to many of the struggles Veteran families endure.

Russ had an Amazing appetite for life and always seized the day full of energy and enthusiasm. We are all truly blessed to have had the opportunity to be in the company of such an amazing man! The moments we shared are indelible upon our hearts and the lessons he taught us will echo through the generations to come.

In times of leisure, Russ enjoyed watching sports and attending games ( Cubs, Bears, Bulls, Blackhawks, White Sox and Northwestern Football), Blues music, concerts, plays, hiking, birdwatching, bowling, family gatherings, going to restaurants (especially Pequod's Pizza-our family tradition), kayaking and so much more!

His favorite passion was spending the summer's at the lake cottage in Door County Wisconsin where he had spent every summer since his father bought it when he was a small child. He had a passion for birdwatching while there and particularly enjoyed the company of Hummingbirds and Blue Jays. It was a place where he enjoyed solace and reflection as well as leisure. While he was there he would especially enjoy, golfing, picking cherries, kayaking, hiking, Peninsula Players Theater, hanging out at the Lily Bay Sawmill, Cherry Wine, The Hitching Post, Washington Island and Al Johnson's Restaurant and many more! He most likely had explored all of Door County in his life and was very knowledgeable in it's history. The wonderful memories our family and friends have shared there will live in us forever!

At the end, Russ was battling his 4rth bout of cancer in the last 20 years. He fought valiantly through all of these trials and never once complained. He was an incredible example of courage and intestinal fortitude. He battled and had a positive outlook all the way to his passing.

A Private memorial will be organized in his honor. We will make those arrangements public when the event is planned. Please consider donating to bluestarfam.org and cancer.org

I learned how to live a life. He had spent every ounce of his energy in doing something productive. He never complained and believes in hard work.

Today is Russ' birthday. I am reflecting on Russ and all of the lives he touched with his boundless enthusiasm, heart of service, and wry humor. I am so fortunate to have spent time with Russ in a volunteer capacity and in a personal one, enjoying concerts together in Door County and at the U of C Folk Fest. Russ, your service and unique personality are very much missed.

On behalf of Blue Star Families, I want to send our sincere condolences upon learning of the passing of Russell Hopkins, an Army Veteran, Blue Star Families member, and leader in the military/veteran service organization community. Russ´s tireless service to his country but also to his community that continued well beyond his military service is a legacy that will live on for years and decades to come. His memory will remain an example to those who hope to leave behind a better world than the one that they found. Our thoughts, prayers, appreciation, and gratitude go out to Russ and his family. May he rest in peace.

I have had the opportunity to know Russ in an election campaign where we both volunteered probably in the year 2009. That was the beginning of our friendship and till now I stayed in touch with him mainly through emails. My last email to him was on his birthday in Jan, 2023 when I didn't hear from him in months then I realized that He is no more. I just read his obituary. I'm not much with words but all I want to say is that I'm so honored to know Russ as a Friend, a Mentor and a Well-Wisher. Russ had helped me achieve my American Dream and motivated me in every path of life. We shared arts, cultural events, theatre and of course music. 'In Spite of Ourselves', the song by John Prine will always remind me of Russ. He was my one and only true friend in Chicago. God Bless him. I know your soul will be at rest and in peace. love

The announcement of Russ's passing came as a shock to me. As a fellow military veteran (Army Nurse Corps), I worked with Russ on the Coalition of Veterans Organizations (CVO) over a few years address quality of life concerns regarding veteran. We had several lengthy conversations about the direction for our organization in assuring that US Veterans needs are well articulated to the communities of solution ways of fulfilling the nation's promises to its military veterans and to honor of all veterans by advocating on their behalf. Russ was very instrumental in bringing new life to CVO and its Board of Directors. We looked forward to meeting via Zoom or in-person conferencing on December 21, 2022. Although Russ had briefly shared his cancer diagnosis with me, his mission of working for veterans was his primary concern, as above his own needs. His efforts were over and above the expectations for a person of his age. He gave to others until the end, which most of us could only imagine was so near since we last met. I will certainly miss working with him. On behalf of the National Women Veterans United (a member organization of CVO) and the CVO, we bid you a final salute Comrade Russ.

Hello Russ ~ I know now you are in perfect peace and without a care! We ~ you and I ~ shared some interesting emails and chats about the state of veterans ! And i mean a lot of emails ~You were most prolific in the English language I dare say. I had no knowledge of most of your life story until i read your obituary. It is amazing how little we know about each other as human beings. I only wish I had more time to have learned more about your story. You have indeed enjoyed a long chapter with loving family and wonderful experiences.
I last spoke briefly with you when you were first admitted to the hospital and requested no more calls at the time. I totally respected your wish.
Life is so short: but you certainly lived it to the fullest.
I know you will be missed by many, especially the veteran population. Thank you for your participation and passion in so much veterans´ groups including the CVO as Chair and as a member of the Veterans Mental Health Council at Hines VA. And now Rest In Peace.
