Russell Jelks Sr.

Vaughn Russell Jelks, Sr. , 86 years old of Tickfaw, Louisiana, passed away Thursday, March 6, 2014, at North Oaks Hospital in Hammond, LA. He was born March 19, 1927, in Iota, LA. Russell served in the United States Coast Guard Auxillary and retired as a carpenter with Local 1098. Surviving are his daughters & son-in-law, Margaret Irene and Russell E. Sibley of Amite, LA; Linda and Leslie Bankston of Roseland, LA; sons and daughter-in-law, Vaughn Jelks of Covington; Rodney and Beth Jelks of Natalbany; grandchildren, Monette Sibley Cleveland (David), Gene Sibley, Emily Sibley Ridgel (Jack), Maggie Sibley Moncayo (Ines), Layton Bankston, Laura Bankston, Trey Jelks, Jessica Jelks, Amanda Jelks Dickson (Tony), Jamie Jelks, Adam White, Patrick White (Faith), Eric White (fiance', Jen Lee); great-grandchildren, Meredith & Micah Cleveland, Deanna & Dara Havard, Isabella Moncayo, Brayden & Logan Ridgel, Kaleigh Scallan, Kennedy White, Liam Dickson; sister-in-law, Mildred Robertson Briggs; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Margaret Robertson Jelks; parents, John Boatner Jelks & Monette Eloise Boutte Jelks; daughter-in-law, Becky Schmidt Jelks; brothers, Harold Jelks and James L. Jelks; sisters, Majorie Dimple Jelks Wagner, Genevieve Jelks Lawrence, Dorothy Jelks Lawrence, Gladys Jelks Hadden. Friends will be received Saturday, March 8, 2014 from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm and on Sunday, March 9th from 10:00 am until 1:30 pm at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home in Hammond. Services will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, March 9, 2014 at Old Zion Hill Baptist Church, 25890 Hwy 442, Albany, LA with Rev. Gary Dennis and Rev. Edward Jelks officiating. Interment will follow in the Old Zion Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.
