Russell Melton Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 26, 2013.
Melton, Russell D. Age 67, of White Bear Lake, passed away on February 21, 2013, after a long and arduous battle with cancer. Preceded in death by parents Dean and Marian, and younger brother Mark. Russ grew up in Alexandria and graduated from the University of MN's Institute of Technology and William Mitchell College of Law. As a US Navy submariner, Russ served from 1963-1969 as Reactor Operator aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln and USS John Marshall ballistic missile nuclear submarines. Russ began his legal career as a founding partner of the Foley & Mansfield law firm. In 2008, he moved to Meagher & Geer where he led the Catastrophic Loss Practice Group responding to large fires, explosions, chemical releases and other disasters on behalf of his insurance company clients. He organized a team of technically-trained lawyers, specifically young attorneys who also had engineering degrees and created the concept of "the convergence of science and law." Self-nicknamed "The Man in Black," Russ was born in North Carolina and considered himself a Southern Gentleman with a love of fried chicken, grits, collard greens, peach cobbler and introduced many to the concept of the six-egg omelet. Russ' Scottish heritage was very special to him and he made several trips to Scotland. Dressed in a Clan Clark tartan kilt he hosted many Scottish-themed parties at his home where bagpipers would perform with gusto, marching up the driveway and into the house Russ called "Castle Muldoon." Though he gave up his dream of being a rock star saying it was easier to make money as a lawyer, Russ idolized the Rolling Stones and almost every business or personal conversation included some reference to Keith Richards. He was an avid reader and sought out people with whom he could discuss the latest books. Russ' passion for literature is evident by his vast library that includes books on history, technology, military, mysteries, detective stories, westerns and science fiction. Russ loved motorcycles, vintage hot-rods and his classic '65 Corvette Stingray. Survived by son Cameron, daughter Mackenzie, fiancée Christine Barrows and brother Neil (Sally Bongard). Funeral service Saturday, March 9th, 2 pm at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1200 Marquette Avenue, Minneapolis, MN 55403. Reception to follow; details pending. Russ' children request in lieu of flowers memorials to The National Math and Science Initiative. Donation site: www.nms.org/custom/donate.aspx

Russ was a very colorful person to have as a boss during the first year of my legal career. He was intelligent, creative and could tell some great stories. I'm so sorry to find out the world has lost such a trailblazer.

Russ made such a great impression on me. He was so kind and sweet to me. He called me honey, and with out saying it he opened his heart to me. With tears in my eyes I send my sympathy to every one he touched. I will miss him dearly

Russ was a natural leader with a larger than life personality. He was tirelessly devoted to two things - the education and welfare of Cam and McKenzie and advancing scientific principles in the legal arena. As others have noted, he was truly one of a kind.

Russ was a character! Everyone who knew him loved to be near him and relish in his stories from the past. I miss that and I miss him.

I will never forget Mr. Russ Melton! He was one of the most sarcastic and funny men I have had the pleasure of knowing. I did his hair for the past couple years before he got really sick, did not see him for a while, but then he called for a haircut a few weeks back. I am glad to have spent a little time with him before he passed. I would have forever gone to make house calls for him as long as he needed, and what brings me comfort, is that he knew that! Prayers to his family and friends. Kim Hanson

Russ, You were one of toughest submariners I know. Working with you at the cable network doing the Deep Dive News videos a few years ago still brings back fond memories. I know you're in Submariners heaven. You will be missed my friend.

Neil and Russell's family,
I am so sadden by the news of Russell's death. Russell was a bit older, so I don't remmber him being around too much, but I have lots of fond memories of your Mom and times hanging out with Mark. And especially riding in the cool yellow chevy nomand when my brother Mike bought it from you or Russell. Thinking of you.

One of the most unique individuals I have ever met. He always had better stories than mine and I enjoyed listening to every one of them, sometimes more than once. I am positive that this he will be missed by anyone that knew him well.

My deepest sympathies on such a profound loss. What a privilege to work with such a knowledgeable, inspiring, and entertaining gentleman so many years ago. To my delight, Russ taught me more about life than work itself, and always pushed the limits of what one could dream. My thoughts are with you, and may his memory be eternal.

I am so thankful for the past seven years that I knew Russ; he truly was one of a kind. The father that he was reflects in the strength that both Mac and Cam exemplify. You two have so many people around you who love you.

On behalf of the entire fire district and myself, we are so sorry to hear this news. Russ was a very funny and talented individual. He set the bar high for fire investigations and his practice and will be missed. He was always fun to listen to during his instruction and passed on many skills he knew. If there is anything we can do, please call us.

Mackenzie, Cameron, and Neil: it was an honor and a privilege to work for Russ for 9 years. He was not only my boss, but he was my family. I loved him dearly and I will miss him every minute. He was very proud of you kids, and talked about your accomplishments all the time. Christine, thanks for being his guardian angel. You truly were a gift to him from above. I love you all.
