I met Ruth through Andy, whom I knew from the hair and wig store he manages. And because we live only a mile or two from each other, we´d shop at the same market. Mom was always with him.
Our shopping at the same grocery store led to occasional dinners at our local Italian restaurant. Mom couldn´t hear well, but that didn´t stop her from enjoying a meal out. Paraphrasing but close enough to her words, she would say, several times, "Oh, isn´t this nice."
And it was nice.
What was very evident was that Andy loved her, making sure she had the type of food she wanted, that it was cut in bite sizes, if necessary, and escorting her out the door at her speed, obviously respecting her limits.
His weekday off coincided with her doctors´ appointments. I could tell he loved her, even cherished her, and was committed to ensuring she could live at home.
I have great respect for the both of them.
I´m sorry she´s gone.
