Ruth Szuba Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 8, 2024.
Ruth Ann Szuba (Shannon), born on April 21, 1946, in Erie, Pennsylvania, passed away on November 2, 2024, at AHN Hospital in Erie. She was the beloved daughter of the late Florence (Carrick) Shannon and William Shannon. Ruth's life was a testament to her unwavering faith and devotion to her family.

Ruth married the love of her life, Ronald Szuba in 1963, and together they raised five children: Theresa Baumann (Michael), Phillip Szuba, Ruthie Smerick (Robert), Jennifer Chamberlin (Paul), and Michelle Pham (Hung). She was a loving grandmother to 11 grandchildren and a great-grandmother to 14 great-grandchildren.

Ruth attended Strong Vincent High School, and later pursued her dream of becoming a Registered Nurse, graduating at the top of her class from St. Vincent School of Nursing. She served with compassion for 12 years at St. Vincent Hospital, where her gentle spirit touched many lives. Her work was a reflection of her deep commitment to serving others.

Ruth had a passion for travel and a love for nature, particularly in watching storms, which reflected her ability to see beauty in the world. In 1999, Ruth and Ronald moved to Las Vegas, where they spent 18 joyful years before returning to Pennsylvania in 2017.

Ruth is survived by her devoted husband, Ronald; her beloved children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; her brother-in-law William Szuba (Brenda); and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Florence and William Shannon; her siblings, Margaret Dunn, Catherine & Stanley Prohowski, Carolyn Fonda, and William Shannon; her nephew, David Shannon; several cherished in-laws including her parents-in-law, E. Phyllis & Gregory Szuba; brothers-in-law Michael and George Szuba; and sister-in-law, Nan Szuba.

A memorial service is to be determined at a later date. Cremation services provided by Cardaro Funeral Home in New Kensington, PA. In her memory, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society or the American Cancer Society, causes that were close to Ruth's heart.

As we bid farewell to Ruth, we take comfort in the knowledge that she is at peace, embraced by the eternal love of her Creator. Her life was a testament to her faith, and her spirit will continue to inspire those she leaves behind. May she rest in the arms of the Lord, her soul forever at peace.

Ron,

It was an honor meeting Ruth when you and I worked together in Las Vegas, and I was always impressed by your devotion to her and the obvious love between you both. God bless.

I was just thinking as I posted this obituary on Facebook. Mom was constantly curious. When she had a question, she couldn´t quit until she found the answer. She told me that when she was a little girl, Uncle Steve used to use a word she didn´t know, then when she asked him what it meant, he would send her off to "look it up". She never stopped doing that.
