Ryan Lynn was born on a wintery day January 13, 1982 to Marvin and Barbara (Heerema) Mortensen in Ames, IA. He graduated from Jefferson-Scranton High School in 2000 and then attended Central College in Pella, IA where he graduated in 2004 with his Bachelor's Degree in Communications. Ryan was united in marriage to Megan Bonnstetter and they were blessed with two beautiful daughters: Finlay Rae and Franki Louise. They were later divorced. He was most recently employed at John Deere with their Intelligent Solutions Group in Urbandale, IA.

Ryan enjoyed spending time with his family, from teasing his younger brother and sister to farm talk with his dad and grandpa. He loved every minute he spent with his daughters, watching movies with them such as their recent favorite, Moana. He also enjoyed watching Star Wars, music and football.

Left to cherish in his memory are Ryan's daughters: Finlay Rae and Franki Louise of Johnston, IA; parents, Marv and Barbara Mortensen of Ankeny; brother, Alex (Megan) Mortensen and daughters Katelyn & Emmaline of Kansas City, MO; sister, Jeneka Mortensen of West Des Moines; grandfather, Ray Mortensen of Fort Dodge; along with many aunts, uncles, cousins, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents: Ralph and Frances (Bielema) Heerema and paternal grandmother Eunice (Peterson) Mortensen.

Ryan's Family,

Thank you for sharing this wonderful man with all of us at John Deere. Please know that Ryan touched all of our lives in a positive way. I hope and pray that time helps erase the pain of losing Ryan but does not erase a lifetime of fond memories.

Ryan was always great to be around was truely a gentle giant. I was on the wresting team with ryan and would regularly go to his house to play PlayStation before wresting meets. After high school whenever we did cross paths or talk there was always genuine excitement and interest from him into what was going on with me and others. You will be missed Mort.

Sometimes God calls your name because he has work for you to do in heaven. I know Mort is there checking over the crops and joining the Rugby team. Mort always had a smile and good natured message when ever we would meet, usually at the Rugby pitch in Iowa Falls . Mort was a gentle giant with a heart of Gold. My son Alex who admired Mort is telling him about the Rugby team in Heaven I am sure. Mort spirit will always be here and will never be forgotten. God has a plan for him. God Bless his family.

Dear Mortensen family,
My heart is heavy tonight. Ryan went to school with our son, Michael Walker, and we always considered him to be an upstanding young man. He grew into such a fine young man and that wonderful smile of his remained.
May God give you peace in the days and years ahead. His memory will live on in all who knew him. We're honored to have been able to have him in our lives.

I am heart broken about the loss of Ryan. I have so many memories of time with him in school, in sports, band, Ryan just stopping by because he was in Ames and wanted to see what was going on or just coming over to his house during free periods during high school. His happiness was infectious and it made you happier. Ryan was a great person and although it'd been a long time since we visited, I will miss him dearly. I pray for peace and comfort to his family when that time can come.
