Sally Chavez Obituary

Published by Chicago Tribune on Apr. 12, 2020.
Sally Elizabeth Chavez (née Vandervoort), age 43 of Glenview, Illinois passed away on April 14, 2019 after battling a long-term illness. A private funeral with close friends and family was held, with Fr. Wayne Watts of St. Joseph Church presiding.

She was born to George and Mimi Vandervoort in Chicago, Illinois in 1975. She grew up in Wilmette, IL and went to New Trier High School and attended Johns Hopkins, Loyola University, and DePaul University. She received a bachelor's degree in psychology, and master's degrees in accounting and in social work. She earned her Certified Public Accounting degree in 2002. She worked for five years at the Boeing Company as an Internal Auditor. In 2001, she married Ariel Chavez, PA-C. Together they raised their lovely daughter Sophie who was born in 2016.

Sally loved animals and had several beloved pets including "Warmie," "Arnie," and "Belita." She was a long time volunteer for the Tree House Humane Society animal shelter in Chicago. She loved music, especially classical music and played the violin, viola, and piano. Sally was a frequent attendee of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Evanston Symphony Orchestra, and Ravinia. She enjoyed reading and needlepoint as a hobby and met with a weekly needlepoint club in Evanston. Cooking and trying new recipes to share with friends and family was something else she was quite fond of. She enjoyed skiing and travel. Indeed, Sally literally traveled around the world with visits to Asia, Europe, and Latin America.

In addition to her husband, daughter, and parents, she is survived by her brother Robert and her loving cousins, in-laws, and friends. She is buried beside her paternal grandparents in Lake Forest Cemetery.

We remain heartbroken about Sally, but know that she will live on in the hearts of all that knew her. We find some joy knowing that her beautiful spirit is alive in her precious child. She and the family remain in our prayers for peace and comfort. May God's healing embrace bring comfort from grieving; and joy in the knowledge that Sally is safe in the arms of our Lord.

How truly heartbroken we were when we heard the news. It was so great seeing Sally, Ariel, and Bobby in Michigan for Laura and Tommy's wedding in August 2018. It was such a fantastic reminder of when Sally and Bobby were in our wedding in 1984, upon their return from Indonesia. And how lovely for Sally and Ariel to include Katy in their own wedding. We see Sally's beautiful face every time we see pictures of Sophie and cannot wait to meet her! Sally will be dearly missed by all.❤

We will always remember her smile and her laugh! She smiled with her whole face and laughed genuinely. She didn't know how funny she was. She listened and remember details from past conversations as to check in with us at a later time. Was still a believer in writing down important dates like birthdays and anniversaries so she could handwrite a card with beautiful art on it. She was truly always seeking connections with people which has been lost these days. Because of her, we check in and listen more. May she Rest In Peace. She is greatly missed.

Sally was a very nice woman who always was so very nice to me. She was always so hospitable to my whole family. Her whole family including her husband are some of the nicest people you will ever meet in your life. I wish nothing but the best for Mimi, George, Bob, Ariel and their Baby girl. I know Sally will be looking out for everyone because that is the type of person she was.

We only had two sets of cousins growing up and, of course, Bobby and Sally were our favorites. They were so much fun to be around and our family loved it when the Vandervoort's came to visit us in Maryland. Sally was an extraordinary young woman who was filled with love for her family and especially her husband, Ariel, and her daughter, Sophie. I remember their wedding with such joy because we were all together that day laughing and dancing and Sally was the most beautiful bride I had ever seen. I have such fond memories of Sally as a youngster riding her pony, a talented teenager with her viola, and a devoted mother playing with Sophie and sending us pictures almost daily...which we loved! We miss Sally with all our hearts but will cherish our time we had together.

My Dear Sally, I think about you everyday and miss you with all of my heart. You were truly my best friend, soulmate, loving wife and a great mom to Sophie. Your family, Sophie and I were blessed to share our lives with you. You were smart, talented and such a sweet and caring person. We will always love you. I will always remember the good times, vacations, and family milestones that we shared. May your soul rest in eternal peace in heaven my beautiful Sally. Your loving husband, Ariel

Sally was adored by those who knew her, and especially by her wonderful daughter Sophie. I wonder if she knew how much we loved her. When it is dark enough you can see the stars.

I remember Sally very well. I had been dating her brother , Robert , for some time and we were very happy and in love. Bob was kind enough to introduce me to his little sister who came to visit him in Boston. I remember her as a vibrant and lovely young woman. She was so accepting and kind to me. Sally found joy in the smallest things and seemed to have so much wonderment about the world and her future. Eager to talk about her life as well as listen to mine. I remember that day so well even though it was such a long time of ago , the three of us were so young and still in college. But I remember Sally well, she was truly a loving and kind person. I was very saddened to hear she passed so young and my deepest sympathy goes out to Robert and his family for their loss.
