Sally CURREY Obituary

Published by Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Jul. 16, 2018.
CURREY, Sally McClellan Sally Ann McClellan Currey died at Canterbury Court on July 14, 2018. She was born May 6, 1929 in Enid, Oklahoma, to Laura Ogden and Russell McClellan. She grew up from age 9 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, under the care of her mother and her step-father, Murray Raney, who was very important to her. She had two older sisters, Marion McClellan Smartt of Lookout Mountain, Tennessee and Virginia McClellan McCowen of Macon, Georgia. She was married in 1953 to Bradley Currey, Jr., "the boy next door" who survives her. Sally will be forever remembered by friends and family for her grace, her generous spirit and sense of humor, and her beautiful smile. Since childhood, she was beloved and admired by those who knew her best. The girls at Camp Nakanawa near Mayland, Tennessee, in 1945 elected her Lady of the Lake; she also was named "Chief of the Amazon Tribe" by her camp peers. In her senior year at the Girls Preparatory School in Chattanooga, the student body elected her May Queen. She graduated from Randolph-Macon Woman's College in 1951 with a degree in art and sociology after which she worked as a cartographer for the Tennessee Valley Authority until she married. After moving to Atlanta in 1953, she was fully occupied raising her four children, but also sang in the choir at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, was active in the Atlanta Junior League, served on and chaired the boards of the Training and Counseling Center at St. Luke's and the Study Hall at Emmaus House and was a founder of the One2Another ministry at St. Luke's. She and the late Mary Humphries Hook operated for many years Patterns of Praise, a business that hand-made banners which she designed for baptisms, churches and other organizations. In her later years, although challenged by physical and cognitive disabilities, her faith remained strong and she was able fully to engage in anything musical, to express love for her family and empathy for others who were troubled in any way. She is survived by her husband Brad, her children, Bradley Currey, III, of St. Louis Missouri (Julie Farrar); Anne Currey Bucey (David R.) of Atlanta; Laura Louise Currey Wilson (Clifford C.) of Princeton, New Jersey; and Russell M. Currey (Amy Durrell) of Atlanta, and grandchildren, Nicholas O. Currey and Tonya M. Currey of St. Louis, Missouri; Sarah M. Bucey of Atlanta; Rachel A. Bucey of Los Angeles, California; Richard C. Bucey of New York City; Hannah L. Wilson of Atlanta; Bradley M. Wilson of Chicago, Illinois; Anna B. Currey, Alexander M. Currey and William D. Currey all of Atlanta; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. The family expresses its deep gratitude for the loving care provided by Canterbury Court and Personal Care, Inc. employees, especially Ms. Kimberly Shields. Services will be held at St. Luke's Episcopal Church on Wednesday, July 18 at 10:30AM where her ashes will be interred in the columbarium at the church. There will be a reception in the Parish Hall at the church following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Training and Counseling Center at St. Luke's, the Study Hall, or Moving in the Spirit.

Brad and Russell... I just rec'd the notice from Westrock. I would have made the service otherwise. Sally was so rightfully proud of each of you.

Dear Brad,

I am very sorry to hear this news. I never will forget the mentoring provided by Sally, Mary Hook, and Bootsie Smith when I was being confirmed in the Episcopal Church at St. Luke's. Chuck Bennison had us all go through a LONG year together, and Sally and these great women made it lots of fun, especially at Camp Mikell!

The Candler community sends its prayers.

Blessings,

The Rev. Ellen Echols Purdum
Assistant Dean of Student Life and Spiritual Formation, Candler School of Theology

Vibrant kind generous woman wife and highly accomplished mother to four extraordinary children. She always was gracious. So many fine accomplishments too rare in todays society
