Salvatore Melito Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 27, 2021.
Salvatore Charles Melito was welcomed into heaven on November 27, 2021. Born on August 5, 1937, he was the cherished son to the late Michael and Josephine Melito (nee Catania). Sal was a devoted father to Joanne Melito Casinelli (David), Michael Melito (Donna) and the late Richard Melito (Kellie), doting grandfather to Nicole, David Jr., Noelle, Shannon (Brandon), Michael, Alyssa, Richard, Matthew, great grandfather to Dominic and Wyatt. Sal was a born leader. He served his country in the U.S. Army Reserves as a non- commissioned officer for many years. His career path led him to become a U.S. Postal Employee rising through the ranks and eventually becoming the Postmaster of the Collegeville facility. While at that post, the customer base increased dramatically and he would then be tapped to oversee the construction of a new facility that replaced the old one that served the town for many years. As the postmaster, he had the ultimate responsibility of making sure the mail was delivered on time and he consistently achieved his goals. He retired after 48 years of service to continue in his other position of leadership which was true labor of love. Sal was an American Legion baseball manager. Actually, to say he was just a manager would be a disservice. He guided his team for an astounding 50 yrs. At first, the team was known by its sponsor's name…Gus' Diner. Later, the sponsorship would be picked up by Presidential Caterers and under Sal's firm but fair guidance this team would go on to win multiple championships. Sal's success on the field was properly recognized when he was inducted into the Pennsylvania American Legion Hall of Fame before he retired from coaching in 2017. In his later years, Sal loved to fish with his wife Anna, play horseshoes; he was even the club president, vacation in Nettles, Florida, and spend time with his many friends. Of all the victories he enjoyed, none of them could compare with the day he won the heart of his beloved Anna, who was the love of his life. She was there for him throughout their 59 years of marriage, providing selfless love to the entire family. As Paradise welcomes the arrival of this good and accomplished man, the Heavenly aroma of Anna's spaghetti gravy and home baked bread will only serve to make this long awaited reunion all the better. RIP Sal. Thank you for your 50 year commitment to Legion ball and to your players and families. You helped create some great times and make some great memories both on and off the field. Greatest memory regional game vs Mascaro, down 11 - 3 with 2 outs in 9th, won 12-11. Only you, Sal, could have guided that kind of comeback.

Johanne and Micheal - I am so very very sorry to see we lost Sal. Your parents were gems. We will never see the likes of a couple who were full of love, family values and honorable heritage. Great neighbors and cousins. My Mother looked forward to every August 15th where she got the greatest hug and kiss from her cousin whom she adored. Bill and Vivian Guardino and family send our love and prayers to both of you.

I had the honor of being Sal's friend for nearly 40 years. We first met, when as new salesman, I knocked on his Postmaster's office door in Collegeville. He yelled "What". I opened the door and he said, "Are you Italian"? I said "yes". He said "Good, come on in". We started talking baseball then business and that was it, we became friends for the rest of our lives. That's what I loved about him. Although a great achiever in many different ways, there was no pretense, he was never a phony, just a guy who loved his family, told you how it was and what he thought. The world could use a few more Sal's. May you rest in peace, dear friend, with your beloved Anna.

Sal - You taught me that a baseball team is a family. You brought your players into your family and made us all a part of your life. Rest in peace. The coaching crew is all back together again, You Skip and Charlie are probably game-planning for Mascaro right now.

My heart goes out to the Melito family. Sal was an amazing coach and friend. I loved learning baseball, life lessons from him and talking about our garden tomatoes. Rest easy Sal, I'll never forget you.
