SAM CHO Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 9, 2018.
CHO DR. SAM

Died peacefully in hospice at UPMC Mercy on November 19. A practicing clinical psychologist in Squirrel Hill, he may have been best known for his role in establishing the Dynamo Soccer Club and serving as director of the Squirrel Hill Urban Coalition. His was a life of adventure and change. Born to a prosperous Seoul family in 1936, at 14 he was employed by US/UN forces in Korea where he served as a translator, speaking English, Korean, Chinese, and Japanese. At 18, he immigrated to the U.S. and attended a senior year of high school in Los Angeles before matriculating at Berea College in Kentucky. He later transferred to Ohio State, where he worked nights in the University Hospital while earning degrees through the Ph.D. in psychology. After four years on the faculty of Wooster College, where he developed the College's first computer lab, Dr. Cho worked as a field manager for Pittsburgh-based American Institutes for Research, developing a college entrance exam system in Nigeria and other assignments in Korea. Upon his return to Western Pennsylvania, he served as Executive Director of a hospital-to-community center conversion project in Kittanning, as Director of Planned Parenthood of Pittsburgh, and as a soccer referee and instructor for Dynamo Soccer Club's referees as well as International Soccer Association referees. He loved soccer, and enjoyed recruiting and training talented young referees, some of whom rose to officiate in international matches. In 2017, he was inducted into the Western Pennsylvania Soccer Hall of Fame. Survivors include sons Steven Peter Cho and Paul Michael Cho. A single father in the 1970s, Dr. Cho was particularly proud of his sons' educational accomplishments at Phillips Exeter Academy, Harvard, Columbia, and Princeton. He is also survived by his sister, Lily; and a brother, Kenneth; as well as 10 nieces and nephews. His parents; an infant sister; and two brothers, Michael and Sang, predeceased Dr. Cho. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, December 15, 2018, at 2 p.m. at the Homewood Cemetery Chapel, 1599 South Dallas Ave., Pgh., PA 15217.

It is coming up on 3 years now and I still have so many reminders of Sam. Whenever people ask me about my refereeing career, it always starts with "I had an amazing mentor who took me under his wings." I wish I had the opportunity to share the many stories of Sam....and yes, they are many! Sam would never take "no" (or some other excuse I might try) for an answer. He dragged me (and yes, sometimes I do mean drag) to tournaments all over PA and OH so that I could get experience and so that I could shine. It was never about him...it was about others. He encouraged me to "spread my wings" and he took such pride when he saw me "soar". AND, he was always there to pick up the pieces when things did not go as well as I would like. I remember he came out to Chicago to see one of my big international matches...he said he would not have missed it for the world. What I loved about Sam was that we could have a deep philosophical discussion one moment and a silly laugh the next. Sam will forever be a big part of my life and I will think of him often.

I knew Sam from soccer. We first met in Colorado Springs, CO at an instructor course. He was marvelous. Fun and dry witted. I will miss him.

Sam was a friend first and a referee second. He was a mentor to my husband Art and a loving guide through life's little stumbles. His time as a National Referee inspector and Assessor led him to many new friends around the World. He was always there when I needed him. Our hearts are with all of you and your extended family!
