Sam Lomheim Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 18 to Mar. 19, 2008.
Sam Lomheim October 25, 1927 March 16, 2008 On Sunday, March 16, 2008, surrounded by his loving family, Sam peacefully began his journey into eternity. Though profoundly bereaved, we are comforted by wonderful memories and by Sam's promise that he will be providing piano accompliment for that great sing along in the heavens. Besides Shirley, his wife of 59 years; he leaves Kristine Kell (Bruce), Saskatoon and daughters, Andrea in Toronto, Allison in Montreal and Julie, Saskatoon; Paul (Judy) in Prince Albert; Andrew in Vancouver; Kathy Ofstie in Calgary with sons Dylan, Calgary and Nigel in Cochrane, AB; Karen Berg (Ken) and sons Ken Jr. (Brada), Matthew (Kaley) and daughter Krystal, all of Saskatoon; Mark (Charlene) and son Justyn; Patrick (Kyra Lee) and sons Steven and Owen and daughter Valerie; and Thomas, all in Saskatoon. As well, Sam was especially happy with great grandchildren, Mackenna and Griffin Berg of Saskatoon. The only child of Norwegian immigrants Haldis and Nils Lomheim, Sam was born October 25, 1927. His parents' employer, Hester Seaborn gave him strictly enforced almost daily piano lessons from age 4 to 14 until he discovered jazz, blues and Boogie Woogie. Then for over 60 years, he became an entertainer and piano teacher, including in the 1960's, a six year daily radio program on CKOM. For the first "Two For The Show " with Jack McClung, Sam wrote and performed original parodies, jingles and a weekly Newsical News Review. A graduate of the University of Saskatchewan, Sam was a life-long learner. For all who knew him, Sam was known as caring, compassionate, non-judgmental, respectful of all life and with a quirky sense of humor right to the end of his life. Sam leaves his family with a legacy of music appreciation. A service celebrating Sam's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 20, 2008 at the chapel of Saskatoon Funeral Home. Condolences may emailed to [email protected] Arrangements are entrusted to the SASKATOON FUNERAL HOME, 244-5577.

January 12, 2023 ... I was a piano student of Sam's in the early 1970's, then set it aside for high school. As an adult, I toyed with the piano now and again, always wanting to resurrect my playing.

Two years ago, my husband bought me a keyboard. What was I to play? Well, the sheet music that Sam created for me way back then, of course! I had tucked away my binder of his songs and carried it around with me for almost 50 years.

During these past two years, I have been joyfully renewing my acquaintance with these songs. Every time I do, I think of Sam. I just hopped onto Google to see if I could learn anything about him and came across his obituary. I realize it's not surprising, given the years, but I was still saddened.

Wherever you may be now, Sam, thank you with all my heart for this beautiful gift you gave me ....

Shirley, Kristine, Paul and the rest of the Lomheim family;
I only recently learned of the passing of Sam. It really doesn't matter how old or what condition our parents/spouses are in when they leave us, it is difficult and leaves a saddness and hole in our heart and in our life. I know as I lost my dad on November 7/07 and it was a great loss to us. My heartfelt sympathy, thoughts and prayers to the family.

Dear Shirley, Paul and all of the Lomheim family. I was so sorry to read of Sam's death. Sam was a legend to the Seaborn family, and many stories were told by my dad, Trevor (Scoop) Seaborn and his brothers Ron and George. Thank you for remembering my grandmother, Hester, in Sam's obituary. She was very proud of Sam and the effort he put into his music. I know you will miss him greatly and that Sam and his music will live on in your hearts.

Our deepest sympathy to the family on Sam's passing. Sam had a great gift as a musician and entertainer which he shared with all. We remember his radio days fondly and sitting around at events where Sam performed joining in on a great singalong that Sam would continue as long as you had the wind to keep singing.

I remember sitting at the piano in the basement "studio", hearing his pen scratching out tunes for his students. And the mountains of coloured music... What an honour to have been taught by such a creative, talented man. He surely is teaching in the heavens... and the music will be beautiful! My sympathies to Mrs. Lomheim (our highschool librarian), and the family. Know that Sam's memory will stay alive through the talent he inspired...

I was sorry to hear about Sam's passing. I will always remember his piano lessons when I was young. Sam inspired everyone to play their best. I always enjoyed his talent and natural ability at the piano. We will miss Lumpy Lomheim.

I was saddened by the news of Sam's passing. I loved every piano lesson I had with him on that blue piano surrounded by stacks of his music. I still enjoy playing out of his book and have begun showing my kids his method. I remember his kindness and patience. He showed me to love the piano. Thank you Sam.

My condolences to your family on Sam's passing. I took piano lessons from Sam as a teenager, and he restarted the spark I had for playing. His quiet and unassuming nature coupled with his teaching techniques led me to continue playing when I was ready to quit. Although I hardly have time to play piano at all now, when I do, I can sit and go through the big binder of colorful sheet music I still have, all of which he thoughtfully prepared for his students, and still can play almost all of the songs - what a gift!
He was a wonderful teacher and will truly be missed.
