Sam Maldonado Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 2, 2020.
Sammy (Sam) Maldonado made his last sarcastic comment on July 2, 2020 at the age of 73. He was born on August 22, 1946 weighing a staggering 13 lbs in the town of Pearsall, TX. He was the first-born child of Samuel and Emma Maldonado. Sam was the oldest of seven children and he spent the majority of his childhood being mischievous and doted on by his grandmother Manuela in Cotulla, TX. Sam moved to San Antonio, TX with his family when he was still in elementary school and eventually graduated from Burbank High School in 1964. Sam joined the United States Army and was stationed at Fort Bragg in North Carolina. Upon his return to San Antonio, TX he became an architectural draftsman. After completing his architectural apprenticeship, he took the Texas Architectural Exam and became a licensed architect. Sam was an architect, Vice President of Latin American Development for La Quinta Inns, and was a Project Manager for Urban Concrete. During his youth Sammy enjoyed building intricate tree houses, working on cars, reading books, being out in nature, and was a charro in the Asociacion de Charros San Antonio. As an adult he continued working on cars and began restoring classic mustangs. He relished riding his Harley Davidson, hunting, fishing, camping, archery, home improvements, photography, cooking, barbecuing, reading, joking, and learning about a variety of topics. Sam was bilingual and known for his wit, intellect, and joke telling in both English and Spanish. He had beautiful striking amber colored eyes and a devilish smirk. His work ethic was admirable and he was a wealth of knowledge and wisdom on a myriad of subjects and thoroughly enjoyed Mexican and Texas History. Sam was also known for his wee little temper. Although his temper was legendary, it was a just temper. He was very honest and forthcoming and was never shy to express his point of view. Most of all Sammy was known as a family man. He loved his family dearly and placed them above all else. He was an incredible father of three and has three grandchildren, the newest of which he loved to spoil immensely. Sammy is survived by his wife Susan and daughter Sophia. Two children by his first wife Imelda; son Samuel and his wife Jamie; daughter Sidra (Schimelpfening) and her husband Tom; grandchildren Seamus, Ryann, and Houston Schimelpfening. Sammy is also survived by his six sisters and brothers; sister Sandra and late husband Jeffrey Ross; sister Syria and late husband Joe Martinez; sister Samia and husband Dr. Carl Jordan; brother David and wife Deborah Maldonado; brother Ricky Maldonado; sister Sonia Troilo; and numerous beloved nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. Sammy also leaves behind a crotchety little miniature pinscher dog named Sticks. Sam and Sticks shared similar personalities and they had a very special bond. Sam and Sticks loved each other wholeheartedly. One-time Sam was asked by one of his children why people and animals had to die. He said, "If people and animals didn't die, we'd be up to our necks in dinosaur crap." Spoken like a true poet. MEMORIAL SERVICE THURSDAY, JULY 23, 2020 2:00 P.M. To Susan, Sophia and the entire family: You have endured a tough time. A heartbreaking way to lose someone so important in your lives. I will keep you and Sam in my prayers. I was grateful to attend the funeral by live stream, thank you for that option. The stories and music were wonderful. Sophia, I loved your poem. Sam's memorial video with photos is especially poignant; the images with the children really brings it all into perspective (the video is found below his Obituary on the Porter Loring site). You will find comfort in his love for you and retelling the story of his life. May God bless you all.

Sammy was the elder statesman of my generation of cousins and siblings. He was the beacon we all followed so naturally we were all proud of him as he went from draftsman to architect to set an example for us all. I always felt he was rushed into maturity faster than the rest of us. He is immensely important to our family because, to me, he is still the star whose direction we will follow. Sammy will be sorely missed. Susanne and Leon Rodriguez and family.

Uncle Sammy could cook a deep-fried turkey like nobody's business. I'll never forget the many laughs we shared together and with our family waiting for the turkey to cook each Thanksgiving my dad and I were able to visit. His genuine joy each time I'd walk through the door truly made me feel special despite living states apart, and every mischievous, sarcastic remark aimed at my expense was filled with love. I'll forever miss my Uncle Sammy

It's tough to put into words feeling the loss of Sammy. He helped make so many memories, along with a few laughs at our expense, for my parents and family. I still have my cowboy boots he helped me pick out back in the 80's, photos of the wonderful occasions when he'd barbecue, deep-fry a turkey, grill sausages, and feeling the warmth of a loving home. I'll miss his hugs of greeting and leaving, always with a huge smile. Guess I just gotta wait a little longer for our next hug.

What a character! I've known Sam for about 25 years and he was one of the funniest men I ever knew. I don't think I ever saw him that he didn't have that mischievous look in his eye and that half grin that told you he had something up his sleeve to do or say. He truly epitomized "a life well lived". You will be missed my friend.

Sam was one of a kind, mainly because I don't think the world could handle two. He was an AMAZING cook and storyteller! I loved his jokes - even when I was the butt of one, which happened often. My sincerest sympathies to your family. Julia McDonald

We didn't know him until Tom brought Sidra into our lives, but his humor and wit made him outstanding. I will not forget the story Tom told of Sam offering him his truck in exchange for marrying Sidra! The three of them had the most amazing connection and Sam will always be alive and well in our hearts, cracking jokes and being SAM!

Keep an eye on Seamus, Sam. Please guide us as he matures...I have a feeling he will be a little Sam!

A time to be born and a time to die...a time to cry and a time to laugh. A time to grieve and a time to dance. Ecc 3 1-8. I think your Dad would want you to always laugh and dance.
