Sandra Sue Bailey, affectionately known as Sandy, Sis, and Sissy, passed away peacefully on January 29, 2025, at the age of 82 at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro, NC. Born on January 8, 1943, in Leaksville, NC, she was the cherished daughter of Charles Edward Bailey and Myra Bailey Priddy.
Sandy spent her childhood in Stoneville, NC, where she attended school and graduated with the Class of 1961. She remained close with her classmates and enjoyed organizing and attending class reunions for many years. Her early life was filled with adventure, growing up with a father who was a well-known stunt pilot. Sandy fondly recalled the excitement surrounding her father's aerial feats, even sharing the experience with her dog, Smokey, who often accompanied him. Tragically, Sandy lost her father in a flying accident when she was just eight years old. Despite this heartbreak, her family found strength together, welcoming her beloved sister, Charles Anna Bailey, soon after.
Her mother, grandparents, and sister created a loving and nurturing home, filled with treasured celebrations, delicious homemade meals, and shared stories. Sandy inherited a love of good food from her mother, Myra, who was renowned for her exceptional culinary talents. Her grandfather, Earnest Archie Bennett, and grandmother, Alice Lemons Bennett, played a significant role in shaping her independence and generous spirit.
Sandy also cherished her stepfather, Dillard Lucian Priddy, who was part of a talented musical family that frequently toured. She had a deep appreciation for music, arts, and crafts, and spent many joyful nights playing games and listening to stories about the past. She lovingly cared for her mother and grandparents in their later years, a testament to her unwavering devotion to family. Her beloved poodles, Jacques and Toby, were also treasured members of her youth.
Sandy was a pillar of strength, independence, and intelligence. She built a successful career as an administrative professional and was a dedicated and beloved bank teller at People's Bank, which later became First Citizens Bank in downtown Madison. Her exceptional memory, sharp wit, and keen observational skills made her a valued colleague and friend. She brought laughter, warmth, and kindness to everyone she encountered.
An avid reader, masterful letter writer, and passionate traveler in her younger years, Sandy also had a deep appreciation for fine art. She delighted in exploring new restaurants with family and friends, always savoring the joys of good food and conversation. Her generosity extended beyond her immediate circle, as she regularly supported various charities.
Sandy is survived by her beloved sister, Charles Anna Bailey Henson; her niece, Tracy Higgs Haaland (Jon), who lovingly referred to her as "My favorite person in the world!"; and many dear cousins, including Lynn Peacock (Darwin) of Warner Robins, GA, Greg Williams of Salinas, CA, Elaine Shamel (Travis) of Raleigh, NC, Charles Dillon (Mavis) of Madison, NC, Shannon Atwood (Rick) of Madison, NC, Cheryl Lide (Ted) of Stokesdale, NC, Tammy Bailey of Walnut Cove, NC, and Anne Eller of Chapel Hill, NC.
She will also be deeply missed by her best friend and longtime neighbor, Maxine Yeoman, who, along with her family, became an extended family to Sandy over the years. Sandy's love and appreciation for Maxine and her family knew no bounds.
Sandy's infectious laughter, warm smile, and generous spirit will be cherished forever by her family and friends. Though she has left this world, her memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved her.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the
American Cancer Society in memory of Sandra's beloved mother, Myra.
