Saundra J. (née Shivers) Horne was born on April 12, 1942, in Gary, Indiana and was a longtime member of St. John Baptist Church. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1960. In 1964, Saundra completed her bachelor's degree in nursing from Purdue University. In 1985, she completed her master's degree in nursing from the University of St. Francis. For over 20 years, Saundra was the program chair and professor at the School of Nursing at Ivy Tech's Gary campus until her retirement in 2014. She had a distinguished career for over three decades as a nurse at St. Catherine and St. Mary's Mercy hospitals. After battling a long illness, Saundra passed away peacefully on July 21, 2025. She is preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Willie Horne Sr. Saundra is survived by her two loving children, Tiffany (Gerald) Pointer and Willie (Kelly) Horne Jr.; her three grandchildren; loving Aunt, Mae F. Anthony; and a host of family and friends.

Visitation will take place on Friday, August 15, 2025, from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Guy and Allen Funeral Home in Gary, Indiana, with the family hour beginning at 6:00 p.m. Homegoing services are scheduled for Saturday, August 16, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at St. John Baptist Church, 2457 Massachusetts St, Gary, Indiana.
