SCOTT ROY DUNTON SR.
Scott Roy Dunton Sr., age 72, died unexpectedly on Thursday, March 16, 2023. He was born in
Kingman, Arizona on October 17, 1950, the son of Franklin Roy and Peggy Josephine (Rogers) Dunton.
Scott graduated from Mohave County Union High School in 1968 before attending and graduating from Arizona State University with a degree in Business Real Estate in 1972. Scott was President of the Phi Sigma Kapa fraternity, which he greatly enjoyed and made lifelong friendships. Following graduation, he went to work for his father at Dunton Motors on Route 66 in Kingman. The dealership was dear to his heart, he started working there at the age of nine, sweeping the floors and scrubbing toilets, building his strong work ethic, which he continued to follow the remainder of his life. At the family dealership, Scott worked his way up from salesman to General Manager, to half owner in Dunton Motors. Later, Scott and his father built a new car dealership selling five general motor's lines, including Cadillac and GMC. He eventually owned and franchised dealerships in Kingman, Bullhead City and Lake Havasu City.
In 1974, Scott fell in love with Marilyn Butler who he married in 1975.They shared four children together, Scott Jr, Shane, Shelby, and Shauna. They spent 20 years married and Scott and Marilyn remained close friends. Scott spent the following 27 years with his girlfriend, Cathy Hodges. They loved each other very much and spent their time in Kingman and Scottsdale. Cathy took wonderful care of Scott and was there for him always.
Scott was a great businessman and was a pillar of the community in Kingman, which he loved. He was very involved in Route 66 and a member of the Elks club. Scott had a real estate license since 1972, was involved in planning and zoning and the Downtown Kingman preservation society. He was very passionate about his 50's diner, Mr. D'z, that he and his family opened in 1994 where he sold the root beer he developed himself.
He was preceded in death by granddaughter, Paige.
Scott is survived by his two sons, Scott Dunton Jr. and his wife Dawn, and Shane Dunton and his wife Marilyn; two daughters, Shelby Coston and her husband Gary, and Shauna Campbell and her husband Matt; his ex-wife, Marilyn Bulter; his loving companion, Cathy Hodges; fifteen grandchildren, Colton, Alek his wife Kirsten, Aden and his fiancée Randa, Chase, Kyle, Blake, Cole, McKenna, Bryce, Jack, Cruz, Callan, Kaleb, Bradley and Caia; as well as his sister, Debra Jo Dunton; many nieces and nephews.
Scott was a wonderful father and grandfather and found great joy in spending time with his children and grandchildren. He coached all of his children's soccer teams and loved taking them fishing and hunting. He enjoyed spending time at his ranch and being with friends and family there. Scott never missed a football game and enjoyed watching his granddaughter rodeo. He is so incredibly loved by his family and all of his friends and will be greatly missed forever.
A celebration of life ceremony will be held in Scott's honor at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 15 at the Elks building located at 301 N. Fourth St. in downtown Kingman.
