SCOTT MACKLER Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 17, 2013.
MACKLER--Scott, M.D. The Yeshiva University family is profoundly grieved by the passing of Scott Mackler, M.D. after his heroic battle with ALS for some 15 years during which he steadfastly continued his medical research as a Professor at the University of Pennsylvania, despite the almost complete paralysis of his limbs, by use of his computer and hi-tech machinery directed by his eyes and was even able to produce scientific research papers. His indomitable perseverance and spiritual strength was enabled and enhanced by his loving family. His beloved wife Dr. Lynn and their sons Alexander (and Laura) and Noah, his doting parents, the late Alfred Mackler who predeceased his cherished wife, Helen Mackler, of blessed memory who spent half of every week with him and his family, his adoring brother Harvey (and Karen) Mackler, and deeply caring sister Randi (and Bob) Windheim, his many nieces and nephews represented by Alexander Mackler, on the Joseph Alexander Foundation Board, and a host of devoted friends and colleagues. Yeshiva University has benefitted over the past four decades from the leadership of Dr. Scott Mackler's family who serve on the Joseph Alexander Foundation Inc., which Helen Mackler's brother, Joseph Alexander established, who they named as a Yeshiva University Benefactor, have established significant academic research in its undergraduate and graduate schools with members of the Mackler family, Helen Mackler and Harvey Mackler serving on the Board of Overseers of Yeshiva College and Stern College for Women respectively, and they named the Joseph Alexander Library of the Marsha Stern Yeshiva University High School. May the entire Mackler family be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem. Yeshiva University Richard M. Joel, President

Lynn, Alexander and Noah,
I want to extend my condolences for your loss of husband and father. I feel so privileged to have known Scott and to be able to have him come into my hair salon to get his haircut. He is truly an inspiration and with such courage and strength to continue in his life....everyone's life that he has touched in anyway. I know that what he has accomplished in his works has helped so many. I will miss him and proud to have had him cross my path in life.

Dear Scott,
Your benevolence and humanitarian personality will be sorely missed by all. You are certainly one of the 'good guys' who had so much to offer and was taken from us at such a young age. You can very proudly now, look down on the many thousand people who have supported you during our 14 year run of 5k events an rejoice on how SO MUCH a part of their lives -YOU HAVE BECOME!!! To paraphrase from a very inspirational Hebrew prayer-"As long as we live, you to will live, for you are now a part of us as we remember them"
Always in our prayers!

I am sorry to hear of Scott's passing. He was indeed a special person. Whenever I speak of soccer and coaches he is ALWAYS thought of as such a great role model for my sons and I'm sure many others. He will be missed please know that our thoughts are with you through this difficult time.

I met Scott through his brother Harvey who was my fraternity brother at Penn (Pi Kappa Alpha) which Scott later joined. Scott and Harvey's childhood friend Bob Hackel was my long-time work colleague and Harvey played with us on our office softball team. I clearly remember attending Scott's bachelor dinner near the Quakerbridge (NJ) Mall. I have admired his courage and determination as he tried to cope with his horrific disease through innovative and experimental treatments and devices. A soul like Scott's will surely live on.
