Scott Matthew Rankin

Scott Rankin, 65, formerly of Lake Villa, IL, passed away peacefully at Sarasota Memorial Hospital in Sarasota, FL on May 27, 2023. Scott suffered a complicated fall at his home, breaking his left femur, from which he could not recover. Scott was born in San Diego, CA to SGT Glenn Rankin, USMC, and Patricia (nee: McCauley) on September 30, 1957. The family moved to Waukegan, IL, in 1963 and lived in the "Gardens". As a child, Scott filled his free time with Boy Scouts, roller skating at Park Roller Rink and playing baseball in Lions Woods. Scott graduated from Waukegan East High School in 1977 and entered the United States Marine Corps where he served our country as an Air Traffic Controller. After his service, Scott went back to school and was trained as a Database Engineer, writing "code" for many computer applications which are currently used by the medical community. Scott has one son, Alexander Joseph "A.J." of Western Australia. A.J. shared many fond memories with his Aunt Beth of the fun times the two of them had throughout their lives together. Scott married the love of his life, his "sweetheart", Barbara (Barb) Maddex on July 23, 2005. Scott loved Barb well and unconditionally. When Barb was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis, he was at her side without question. She succumbed to her illness on May 30, 2021. This devastating loss was hard on Scott, so he decided to start over in Florida in August, 2022. Scott lived at the Sheridan Assisted Living Facility in Sarasota where he was loved by all the residents. Scott would light up, and even take over, a room with his outgoing personality. Scott was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Barb, step-daughter Megan Maddex, brother Mark Rankin, and brothers-in-law Michael and Tom Maddex. Scott is survived by his son, AJ of Western Australia, sister Beth Rankin (Frank Contee) of Illinois, grand-daughters Freya and Athena Rankin, of Western Australia, and many nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held Saturday, July 22, 2023, from 10:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. at Christ Community Church, 2500 Dowie Memorial Drive, Zion, IL. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the church with Pastor Ken Langley officiating, followed by full military honors. A celebration luncheon will follow at the church.
