Seniha Gur Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 29, 2020.
Seniha Gur of Lawrenceville, New Jersey, passed away on September 29, 2020, at her home where she was surrounded by her family and friends. She was 90 years of age. Seniha is deeply missed by her sons Suha Gur of Lawrenceville and Reha Gur of Middletown, NJ; granddaughters Emily Gur and Shanin Gur; daughters-in-law Bernadette Gur and Muffie Gur; and sister and brother-in-law Sevim and Erdogan Sonmez of Burhaniye, Turkey. Seniha is pre-deceased by her husband Hayrettin, who passed away in 1980; and her siblings Ihsan and Gurbuz of Ankara. Born in Ankara to Hediye and Bahattin, Seniha showed distinct artistic talent by her teenage years, during which she spent hours studying figure and drawing countless sketches of couture fashion and classical music composers. Later, she graduated from the Ankara College of Art, where she studied decorative art and fashion design. After marrying in 1954, she and her husband moved from Turkey to New Jersey to chart a new course for their family. With little spoken English, yet an abundance of talent, Seniha began her career as an artist at Boehm Studios in Trenton, NJ. Later in 1969, she accepted a role at Lenox China in Trenton, where she painted ceramics. She was promoted to Designer, and later in her career to Senior Designer in the china and crystal design group. Seniha was a recognized master in surface design concept and her work was featured in various Lenox product lines and offerings. She is credited wth the creation of over 100 dinnerware designs and some of the Company's most popular patterns, including "Heritage" and "Tradition," which were specifically produced for the 1989 Lenox Centennial Collection. Seniha was asked to speak at various venues around the U.S. to artists and designers because of her world-class acclaim, passion, talent, and experience. She was so generous with her advice and was eager - and thought it important - to help others grow in their professions of artistry and design work. After her retirement from Lenox in 1996, Seniha worked independently and produced designs for notable china and crystal companies, including Mikasa and Waterford. Seniha loved to travel the world and enjoyed immensely her trips to Italy, China, Thailand, Turkey, and more. An artist of elevated skill, she nevertheless saw beauty in simple things - her patio always brimmed with flowers of every variety, and she nurtured them painstakingly. She delighted in discovering lovely trinkets at flea markets, and decorating and entertaining in her home. Seniha inspired great affection and respect from her countless friends, who join her family in missing her immensely. She will be remembered as having lived well - as a loving wife and mother; affectionate Grandmother; loyal and sweet friend; brilliant artist; and a beautiful person.

Seniha was a treasured friend to me for many years. I will always remember her for her amazing artist flair and for her love of life and all things good and beautiful. I will dearly miss our conversations about family, current events, art, and of course flowers! A truer friend than I could ever have hoped for, was you, dear Seniha.

There are not so many Turkish families in central Jersey. Growing up, I accompanied my parents for get togethers at the Gur home and I fondly remember Bayan Seniha and Bay Hyre’s traditional hospitality. My mother considered her a great friend. Seeing Seniha’s beaming smile as hostess and feeling her warm personality remain with me today. I hope that Reha and Suha accept my condolences.

Reha and Suha and families,
Your mother and father were a wonderful extension of our family when Karen and I were growing up. They were true friends to our parents and I know I have many happy memories of times with both of them. I will always cherish your mother's talent. She was a great example to me that when creativity comes along don't stop it just go with it. I always used to say that she had more talent in one finger than I had in my whole body BUT she always, in her kind sweet way, encouraged me to not give up. I will think of her when finding beauty in nature just as she did .Rest well knowing that her sweet soul will be remembered with love by many.

Aunt Seniha was in my life since I was a child - like family. It's very hard to lose her. I wish her everlasting peace. She was a gentle, kind, artistic gentle-lady.

Our dear friend Seniha will be always remembered with her warmth, kindness, and gentle spirit.

Seniha will live in my heart and I will remember her when I look at flowers, sunsets, sunrises, when I listen to her favorite composers. When I think about her, I will find the same peace and love I had with her in her beautiful garden full of morning glories, roses, daisies and irises, and so many others that she knew all the names of, one by one. I wish I had more time to learn from her about flowers, music, art, and so many more beautiful and meaningful things in life.

Seniha now free and is at peace in her beloved nature in universe.

Biz onu çok sevdik!

What a wonderful person she was. I enjoyed having one-on-one conversations in friends' get together. I had the joy of driving with her to Lambertsville, NJ, and observe her excitement of looking at beautiful items displayed there. She bought a bright red silk fabric and told me that it would be a fancy blouse for her special moments. I loved her as a friend and as an artist and a beautiful woman. Thank you for the memories. Rest in peace dear Seniha.

I had the distinct pleasure of working with Seniha for several years at Lenox. She was perpetually upbeat and always interested in hearing what her colleagues were up to, both professionally and personally. She was almost like a den mother to all of us younger designers, providing encouragement and and a smile that could always light up a room.

My most sincere condolences to her family and friends.
