Shane Gordon "Jabulani" Butler

June 8, 1994 - September 20, 2022
Shane was born two months early in Potchefstroom, South Africa to Jackie and Tony Butler. He was the older brother to Danielle and loving spouse to Janna Holterman. Predeceased by his Poppy Gord Butler, Shane leaves behind Nanny Emma Butler, Grandma and Grandpa Norma and Barry Eveleigh, Aunt Robin Butler and Uncle Roger Blum, Aunt Samantha and Uncle Chris Ball, cousins Jordan, Avery and Alyssa, in-laws Jennifer and Mark Holterman, brother-in-law James Holterman, and family and friends in Newfoundland, Ontario, South Africa and Florida.

Shane spent his early years in Carletonville, SA and Sudbury before the family moved back to Cambridge in 2000. He was active in all sports while growing up but especially hockey, rugby, snowboarding and mountain biking, playing travel hockey for the Cambridge Hawks and rugby with the Brantford Harlequins. Shane had an infectious smile and was a dependable friend who was often the listener that others came to for support and was an extremely hard worker at everything he did. Shane graduated from Southwood Secondary School, had degrees from Queen's University (BSc) and Western University (MSc) in biochemistry and had recently completed the first year of his PhD program at the University of South Florida in Tampa. Shane was a diligent researcher in his chosen field and had his name on a patent with his colleagues at Agriculture Canada in London and on several publications with another one in progress at the time of his passing.

Shane battled with post-concussion syndrome during and after his high school years and was also diagnosed with bipolar disorder, with the condition worsening over the last nine months. Cremation has taken place and a private function will take place at the Eveleigh family cottage on the Bruce Peninsula. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Cambridge Newfoundland Club on Friday, October 7th. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. for a short 7:00 p.m. service followed by an evening of celebration. Casual attire please. Your favourite sports sweater or funky Hawaiian/beach shirts are welcome. For those who can't make the service, it is expected that the service portion will be live-streamed.
