Shannon Beck Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 24, 2014.
Shannon Beck was born at Tripler Army Hospital in Honolulu, Hawaii on 12 December 1969. Shannon was the third of five children born to her parents Dwight and Catherine Beck. As a member of a military family, Shannon was afforded the opportunity to live and be educated in several States within the United States, and in foreign countries such as Canada and Germany. Shannon was a good student, and a very gifted athlete. Participation in sports, both in school and on clubs, was a very important part of her life throughout her formal education years. She graduated from Carsile High School in Carsile, PA in 1988 where she had distinguished herself as star player on the basketball, softball, soccer and field hockey teams. As a freshman, she started on the boys' varsity soccer team – a first at that school. Shannon's athletic future was bright at that point and several top colleges were attempting to recruit her until she suffered a serious knee injury which would have ended the career of most athletes. But typical of Shannon's determination, she overcame that injury and five subsequent knee operations, two of them reconstructive surgeries, to attend Kent State University as a walk-on to compete as a goalie on the women's field hockey team – a sport she had excelled at in high school. Not only did she make the team, but she became the starting goalie in her sophomore year, won two conference championships, and was named to the Mid-American Conference and regional all-star teams, and to the All-American Women's Field Hockey Team as a senior, and still holds collegiate field hockey records for goalies. Following her graduation from Kent State University in 1993 with a degree in Criminal Justice, Shannon was accepted into the Nashville, TN Metropolitan Police Academy, where upon graduation she achieved her life-long ambition of becoming a police officer. She served on the Nashville police force proudly and earned distinction during her ten years of service before being medically retired. She then worked as an in-home care giver for the State of Tennessee until illness hospitalized her in May of 2014. In October of 2013, Shannon was invited back to Kent State University and was inducted into the University's Hall of Fame in recognition of her distinguished athletic career accomplishments. After a hard fought battle, Shannon, at the age of 44, succumbed to a terminal illness at Vanderbilt University Hospital on 18 June 2014, and services will be held at the Olinger Crown Hill Mortuary and Cemetery in Wheat Ridge, CO, 10am, Pavilion of Reflection on 30 June 2014. This very talented, but very simple and loving person has touched many people in an enduring manner during her short span of life, and will be long and fondly remembered by those who were fortunate enough to have known her. In lieu of flowers, her family has requested that memorial contributions be made in Shannon's name to the Happy Tales Humane, at http://happytaleshumane.com, or email Kate Runyan at [email protected].

I am so saddened to see this ! I went to high school with her when her dad was stationed in Louisiana. We were teammates and kept in touch throughout the 90s . We even reunited in Nashville in 99. Funny how life is she was a cop and so was I . We lost touch but I figured we would talk again. Something was telling me its been too long that something was wrong and then I found this. Now I am so sad and wonder what happened. RIP my old friend.. if anyone in her family happens to read this truly I am sorry you lost her.

There will be a Celebration of Life in Nashville, Tennessee in honor of Shannon Saturday July 26th. The location is to be determined. Everyone interested in attending please email [email protected] for details. Unfortunately, like many others, I was not able to attend the services in Denver. Shannon has people all over the country who love her. This event will help bring everyone together to share those cherished memories of a dear friend.

Shannon was a wonderful person and a very well respected Metro Nashville Police Officer. She will be sadly missed by all that knew her. Rest in Peace.

I did not know Shannon, as I only met her once many years ago. I have known her parents, Dwight and Catherine for more than fifty years.I know the kind of people they are so I know Shannon was a great person. Children learn the good traits from their parents and I am sure she only learned the best.
My sympathy goes out to the family as they go through the grieving process. Our prayers are with them all.

I went through the academy with Shannon in 96. She was a great person and a great friend. She always had a smile and a laugh, even on the bad days (TO THE GATE!). She still had that same smile in the hospital. She is missed by everyone who had the honor of knowing her. May God wrap his loving arms around her and her family.

So blessed and fortunate to have played with Shannon at KSU. I will never forget her humble reaction after learning she was the top NCAA Division 1 goalie in our 1991 season. Looked at all of us and said, "It's because of you." Such a sweet smile, always positive and willing to do anything to help a friend in need. We should all aspire to be more like her. I've looked at Tripler Hospital from my office window for years with no real significance. But now I'll have a fond memory of a wonderful person each time I drive by.

Shannon was a hard working, gifted police officer who is respected by all who knew her. For her, police work was a vocation, a calling and that was reflected in her work. She was a woman of strong moral character as well as a woman of tremendous faith. She will be sadly missed. I will miss my friend, partner and fellow Catholic.

Will there be a visitation or memorial service in Nashville?

My late husband, Dr. George A. Pownall, Criminal Justice, Kent State University was a fan of our women's field hockey team. What not to cheer - Coach Kris and family were neighbors, colleagues and fellow sports fans. Shannon and Danielle Payne were his students.
I was very proud to see Shannon and her teammates inducted into the KSU Athletic Hall of Fame -Class of 2013.
As a daughter, sister and friend, Shannon will be greatly missed. Her professionalism in her chosen career -Criminal Justice; her service and loyalty to her teammates and her University was boundless. My condolences to all whose life was touched by this fine young woman.
