My wife and I were most privileged and pleased to have known Sherm and his Wife Mavis.....a wonderful couple and pleased that we had the opportunity to visit each other......I met Sherm through our mutual interest in Amateur Radio....his callsign W0RHT.....mine GM3MQO.......and also Aviation.....I was an Air Traffic Controller and Sherm very much involved with the scene over many years with his own TV programme from WCCO......I had kept close contact with Sherm and was very much at a loss at his passing.....and still miss Him to this Day !!

Being in th right place at the right times does good things. By pure luck 4+ Copies of Marine Wings and the video tape of the histories of VMF 213 and VMF 234 are in the Marine Corps University Archives at Quantico VA.
The tape and the books are now being used in a project telling of Marine Avation Reservists. I got the books and tape from Sherm and Llyle Bradley and they are not part of real hisgtory.
I grew up listening to Sherm the Disc Jockey and watching Wolrd of Avation.
I was the S-3, (a Corporal)
clerk for VMF 213 between 1953-56 and am so haapy to have good memories of Sherm and all the men who contributed to Marine Wings.

I watched Sherm every week growing up in the Twin Cities. Even though I have never taken up flying, I have many good memories of watching his show. That is what the television medium was made for, and I thank Sherm for that.

Dear D’ette, Jeff, Bill & Booen Family:
We would like to express our hearfelt sympathy to all over the passing of Sherm. We fondly recall celebrating a few Marine Corps Birthday Balls with him and wife Mavis. It was an honor and a pleasure to do so. We hope it is a comfort to you that he is now with her, and dear daughter Boni.
Thank you Colonel Booen for your service to this country while serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps and the United States Marine Corps. What a legacy you have left with ALL that you did in your life.

The good that men do DOES live after them. KATE radio is still on the air, Minnesota Flyer is still being published, and thousands of pilots inspired by Sherm still pass his enthusiasm for flight along.
That's a great gift to the aviation fraternity, and as close to immortality on Earth as most of will achieve.

What a privilege to have known such a fine man. I worked with Sherm when I was a director at WCCO, and later we shared announce booth duties. We had aviation in common since I was a laid-off NWA pilot and was fortunate to be able to work at WCCO during those times. What a pleasure to know and work with a legend!

I've known Colonel Booen since 1962, when I was assigned to the Marine Air Reserve Training Detachment, at the Twin Cities Naval Air Station, as the public information NCO. He was a good friend, a good Marine and an avid and valuable supporter of Marine aviation.
I shall never forget him.

Ever since I was a little kid, talking to Sherm on my grandpa's ham radio, I was fascinated with his stories of aviation. Whether it was doing FAA Wings Safety Seminars together at Thunderbird Aviation and Planes of Fame, or the Airshows with Air Expo and Wings of the North, he was an inspiration to me, my grandparents, my dad, my kids, my uncles and everyone who knew him. Oh, how he will be missed.

I was introduced to aviation through Sherm's eyes by watching his program every week when I was a kid. My father also knew him as a ham radio operator. As a former Navy pilot, I can certainly appreciate a fine Marine as well. Through Sherm's career(s) and hobbies, so many folks were reached by him, and their lives were touched. I know mine was.

My father, Harry Goodyear, was also a Marine Wings member with Sherm. They were friends for many years and I am sure they are flying the skies in Heaven! Semper Fi.

My memories of Great-Uncle Sherm are of sitting at my Grandma and Grandpa's on many of the holidays that Sherm and Mavis joined us, listening to him tell of his adventures in flying and telling us kids the story of "The Blizzard". I remember the first time I opened the mailbox to find a copy of "The Minnesota Flyer" inside. How proud and happy I was to have known a man with so many accomplishments and adventures to his credit! Every Sunday I could be found in front of the television, watching and listening to his stories of flying! I still hear him signing off in that voice, so clear and powerful......Happy landings Uncle Sherm!

Thinking of Sherm's life has brought me so many happy memories of his and Mavis's life together. I remember the two of them packing up N758B to head off on exotic vacations with my brother Gary's and my parents, Al (Barney) and Connie Barnum. I remember Sherm and Barney flying N758B for the sheer joy of flying as well as the joy of friendship and cameraderie. I remember being glued to World of Aviation for years and years, mesmerized by that magnificent voice and so proud that I knew Sherm and Mavis. I remember reading Minnesota Flyer cover-to-cover, even though I wasn't a pilot.
I too think of Sherm each and every time I see a V-tail Bonanza, and feel so lucky to have known him and Mavis.
A great avaiator; a great husband, father, and grandfather; a great and proud Marine and American. Rejoice in his life and cherish the many happy memories he has given all of us.

A Minnesota legend has passed. I worked in the WCCO-TV newsroom while in college and was privileged to get to know Sherm. He, as well as The World of Aviation, helped light the fire for my interest in aviation, although it was 15 years later that I settled down long enough in one place to get my private license. To this day, whenever I see an old Bonanza. I think of Sherm.

Oh My Goodness,so sad to hear of Sherm's passing.It was so long ago but Sherm and Mavis were a big part of my youth. His voice-- and Mavis' sweet kindness- I have often thought of them. Sherm took my wedding pictures- in 1975. I always felt so honored to know them, even as a child- I felt like he were famous- and I guess he was...it was pretty special that they were part of my life.I have wonderful memories of the past and Booen family.

Sherm was truly a Minnesota Aviation Legend. Everybody involved in any way in aviation knew him. He was a lovely man. So enjoyed World of Aviation on TV and the Minnesota Flyer newsletter. He lived a wonderful life.

Sherm was employed by my grandfather, Edgar Hayek, to play a major role as a radio engineer in the start-upof KATE radio in Albert Lea in 1937. I also heard many great stories about Sherm from my Dad, Warner Tidemann, who was manager of KATE. Sherm visited the site where my uncle, Lt. Harold Tideman was killed in 1944 in Cassino, Italy at the end of WWII and wrote back to our family to share that experience. Sherm and I have shared stories via email and telephone. I am sorry to hear of Sherm's passing. I have known him since the mid 60s when I started watching his TV show. I was flying at the time and I every week I sat in front of the
TV to learn about aviation from Sherm. My Mother-In-Law was at the same nursing home since September of last year and my Brother-In-Law told me Sherm was in the same facility. I was introduced to Sherm and had many conversations with him up until my Mother-In-Law passed away about one month ago. What a great man he is. He made so many contributions to the world. I am sorry to his family for their loss.

Colonel Sherman Booen was my commanding officer for many years in the Marine Corps Reserve in Minneapolis. He was a fine officer and a proud Marine. I was proud to serve in his command. Sherm got me interested in becoming a pilot and thru his encouragement, received my private pilot's license. He taught me navigating with the VOR system in his beloved Beechcraft 58B. His World of Aviation television show on WCCO-TV every Sunday morning was a must. Semper Fi, colonel!

I fondly remember going to the Officer's Club with Sherm and my brothers. We had a few "Mavis's" and talk about flying. We all grew up watching "The World of Aviation " as our parents were pilots. It was a thrill to spend time with him.He was a true gentleman and will be missed.

The sad passing of an interesting and self-made man.. Ham Operator, WCCO World of Aviation show, Minnesota Flyer magazine, Two Military stents ending with his retirement as a Colonel, fun South Dakota pheasant hunter, a enjoyable companion at the Fort Snelling Officers Club enjoying the "Mavis Martini" etc.etc. We so enjoyed your companionship.

Sherm Booen inspired me to become a pilot.
Whether flying up to Ontario aboard a de Havilland Beaver for a weekend of fishing, or taking us on a tour of North Central Airline's new DC-9 cockpit, Sherm showed me - and tens of thousands of other WCCO-TV viewers - what fun flying could be.
I'm sure Sherm will do quite well with his new set of wings. And like he always taught us - don't forget your pre-flight.
