Shirley Hoogstrate Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jul. 27 to Jul. 28, 2010.

Shirley Mae Hoogstrate

Shirley left us on July 23, 2010 to meet the Lord she loved and to join many loved ones who preceded her.
She was born July 12, 1927 in Hamilton Square, New Jersey. Her parents were Harvey Foster Lockwood and Julia Lockwood, whose maiden name was Lincoln and who had roots that intertwined with our great president of that name. Shirley had two older brothers who preceded her in death, and she is survived by a younger sister, Nancy Bogarth, living in Tennessee.
Through her church and friends she met John Hoogstrate whom she married in 1949. John was a WWII veteran who was preparing to become a pastor when they married. Two girls were born to them, Barbara Jean and Ruth Ellen. Barbara was born during their North Dakota pastorate and Ruth while they served in Kentucky. There were also pastorates in Nebraska and Illinois before they came to Washington in 1968 so John could pastor Westminister Presbyterian church in Everett.
Shirley was always active and faithful as a pastor's wife, ministering to children, active in women's fellowship groups, and exercising hospitality through their home. She did part-time work at Bethany of the Northwest, the Everett School District, and Everett Community College. Her primary joy was always that of wife and mother. Said some of her grandchildren, "She was the most generous person we ever knew."
Shirley is survived by her husband; sister; daughters, Barb (Steve) and Ruth (Al); and six grandchildren, Timothy (Kristy) Turner, Katie (Jesse) Carlson, Julia (Jeremy) Santy, Laura (Darrel) Martin, Matthew Turner and Tamyra Clark Hoogstrate. There are also five great-grandchildren, Coral Turner, Vivian Santy, and Josiah, Isaac and Acacia Carlson.
"Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her... Charm is deceitful and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised." Proverbs 31:28, 30
Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 27, at Solie Funeral Home in Everett with interment at Floral Hills in Lynnwood, WA to follow on Wednesday.

Dear Ruth and Family:
I'm sorry to see that your mom has passed away. I remember way back when she would drive us to Pioneer Girls at your church. Many years have passed since then and I have thought of you often. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
