Shirley WRIGHT Obituary

Published by Edmonton Journal from Sep. 2 to Sep. 5, 2017.
WRIGHT, Shirley Elizabeth
(nee Ellison)
Shirley Elizabeth Wright, was born in Vancouver, August 25, 1928 and attended elementary and high school in the Marpole neighbourhood. She made friends with some of the Japanese girls whose families also lived nearby before their forcible removal from the area. Her lifelong interest in books and learning began with a shelving position in the nearby branch of the Vancouver Public Library, and ended with her earning a Master of Librarianship degree from the Library School in Seattle, Washington where she also worked in a branch of the public library before accepting a position as Children's Librarian in the New Westminster Public Library. There she also became the Deputy Chief Librarian. She was there for fourteen years before accepting an offer from the newly established School of Library and Information Studies at the University of Alberta in 1969 where she taught courses in Public Librarianship, Children's Literature and Storytelling, the latter two courses being popular with students from the nearby College of Education.
With a strong affection for pets, she became active in the local, provincial, and national canine societies and won prizes for her dogs: Jasper, Cutter, and Stitch. She was also active in the Edmonton Community Family Services and the Friends of Edmonton Public Library where she organized the Edmonton Public Library Book Sales. She also served as Chair of the McDougall and Garneau United Churches.
She and her husband moved from their home on 116 Street near the University to the Ashbourne Place for assisted living in 2016. She died on August 28, 2017.
A memorial service will be held for Shirley at Garneau United Church, 11148 84 Avenue NW, Edmonton, on Wednesday, September 6, at 2:00 p.m.

I am so sorry to learn of Shirley Wright's passing. She was Miss Ellison when she first introduced me to the joys of Children's Lit and Professor Wright several years later when I took her Young Adult Lit course. I have such fond memories of classes with her and with John. My sincere condolences...

So sorry to learn of Professor Wright's passing. She was an inspirational and extremely tactful role model. As a former student, I am indebted to her for instilling a love and appreciation for children's literature. Please accept my condolences.

I was saddened to hear of Shirley Wright's death. She turned me into an ardent fan of Kidlit during the year I spent studying in Edmonton,a sentiment that will be echoed by the many librarians she taught through the years.
With heartfelt sympathy for John's loss.

Dear Dean Wright,

I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your dear wife. While I didn't know her well, I know that her contributions to the Faculty of Library Science and to your home were extensive. Take care -- she is in good hands.

Please accept my sympathies. Shirley was amongst my favourite & most influential professors while I completed my MLS in 1986.

While I will always remember "Miss Ellison" with profound respect for her amazing expertise in children's and young adults' literature and librarianship, and for her excellent instruction in these fields, I will never forget her as a new blushing bride! Through her new position at the School of Library Science in 1968, she met another incredible professor of Library Science, John Wright. The two married in 1969 and their marriage was the joyous segment of my year as a student in Library Science. Shirley and John came back from their wedding and I had never seen such a happy, blushing bride with such a proud groom! Their joy in one another was palpable and uplifting, and I cannot imagine a more compatible union. They both sustained one another through almost half a century together. Rest easy, "Miss Ellison", and thank you.
