Shukri Khuri Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 29, 2008.
KHURI, Shukri F., M.D. Of Westwood, Massachusetts. Beloved husband of Randa (Domian) Khuri and loving father of Hania Khuri-Trapper and husband, Chris, of Westwood, Maya Khuri Plotkin and husband, David, of Westwood and Naseem Shukri Khuri of Westwood. Loving grandfather of Sami, Malek, Faris and Sena. Devoted son of Vera (Zeidan) Khouri of Walpole and the late Fayez Khouri, brother of Rajai Khouri of London, England. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Memorial service set for Friday, October 3, 2008 at Trinity Church, 206 Clarendon St., Copley Plaza, Boston at 3:00 pm. The most loving of fathers, the most skillful of surgeons and the most compassionate of men. Dr. Khuri was Chief of Surgery at the Brockton/West Roxbury VA Medical Center and the VA Boston Healthcare System, Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School, and Vice Chairman of the Department of Surgery, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston. His research led to the development of the first metabolic tool for the online assessment of myocardial protection during cardiac surgery. Additionally, he led a unique national effort within the VA that established the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP), now recognized by the surgical community as the standard for the comparative assessment of quality of surgical care and for continuous improvement in surgery. A humble public servant, Dr. Khuri devoted his clinical career to the medical care of U.S. veterans and to his extensive research in the advancement of cardiac surgery for future generations. Born in Jerusalem, Dr. Khuri spent countless years advocating for peace and justice in the Holy Land. Above all else, his unwavering love of life and eternal optimism continue to inspire all the lives he has touched. Shukri and I worked together for many years. He was a brilliant and beautiful human being. He had a way to always look at the big picture. Cardiac surgery will miss him.
Of course Randa and his whole family will miss him greatly. He was like my young brother and I miss him deeply.
Humanity will miss him.

It is impossible to fully describe the breadth and depth of Dr. Khuri’s influence in modern surgery. But beyond his professional life, Shukri was a gentleman of uncanny grace and unfailing warmth.

Shukri's infecious smile in Maingate Magazine reminded me of may days at IC where I first met him. His brother Rajai's & I were classmates in elementary school & we surely looked up to Shukri as our role model.

When I realized that the page was titled "in memoriam" it gave me a sinking feeling.

Shukri will be missed by many including some who have not seen him for over four decades.

My deepest sympathies to his family.

Dear Mrs. Khuri, Please accept my deepest sympathy with Shukri's passing. Having trained with Shukri during his arrival, we were in the unique position to see his gifts and the lasting legacy of his spirit. He was one of most outstanding teachers, mentors, and physicians that I ever worked with and his compassion for his patients is something that I have carried through my entire career. His contribution to surgery will live decades beyond his own life. Sincerely, Douglas Grey, M.D.

Dear Randa,
We got to know you and Shukri at Nadia, Maya, and Joumana's birthday parties. Without knowing it, you and Shukri were standing in for all the absent grand-parents, not just Hani and Yousef's kids'. Your kindness, smiles and happiness at these early birthdays made it easier to imagine all our parents were there, too.

I have heard indirectly of Shukri's long & painful struggle and I just want you to know that every mention of Shukri came with a flood of compliments, about his generosity and stoicism, about his good works and significant medical contributions, and about both of your courage and dignity.
I wish you fortitude and solace in these difficult days and hope your music and loving family will help you through.
With our condoleances,
Reem Yared

To the Khuri Family:

Shukri was the prime and best example of what our people can accomplish in life. We can only take his humanist spirit which he spread throughout the world in his science, medicine, and academia and love for his family, friends and collegues and continue his spirit. His example will live forever as well as his life's work. We have all learned from him.

Dear Randa:

I'm so sorry to hear about the passing of Shukri. He was so young and its really not fair to lose someone so soon. My father also had cancer and died at about the same age, 66, only about a year after being diagnosed. Today is the 16th year since he passed and I still think about him and wish he was here to see and do things with me. I'm sure you will miss Shukri dearly, and again I'm sorry for your loss I know exactly how you feel. I hope you will find some strength to get through this difficult time. Please accept my deepest condolences, I truely mean it and writing this brought tears to my eyes.

Dear Randa, Hanai, Maya and Naseem, Chris and David

We are so deeply sorry… Shukri is one of the most marvelous people we have met. What we most admired was his deep love for you and your children, and his special concern for education. As we see it, he lived with passion, full of joy and fun. He had a strong influence on how we see surgery, and we learned from him about the huge responsibility that we have to improve the quality of our work and to influence others. We have so many good memories – both of you are an example of a deep, loving relationship, honest, and loyal. Knowing you – him, and through him, you – has been one of the best things that could happen for my family and I. We are here, for you, at any time, with all of our love.

The Mexican Academy of Surgery and the Mexican Association of General Surgery wants to express their deep sorrow for the loss of Dr. Khuri. Dr. Khuri was not just the authority on improving quality in surgical practice, but a marvelous human being. He was loyal to his values – he believed education could improve the life of thousands of sick people, and taught us the value of analyzing surgery outcomes to improve the way we deliver care in Mexico. Above all, he enjoyed life, lived it with passion, was really funny, and opened his heart for new friendship. He loved the culture of Mexico, and he loved Mexican food, which he enjoyed whenever possible. We have many wonderful memories of him – during a meeting in Acapulco, Dr. Khuri decided to go on a parachute ride, worrying his lovely wife Randa, taking photos from the air, and returning extremely happy. We will remember Dr. Khuri as we carry on his teachings about the quality of surgical care and use them to further our work

Dear Randa & Family,

I am really sorry to hear about Shukri?s death. I pray that he is now in a better place with his suffering gone. His pain must have caused you and the family grief and distress, and I find it difficult to find the right words to express my feelings of sympathy towards you. I vividly remember the last time I saw you and Shukri last October over a game of scrabble with Maha, Milhim, and Randa Tarazi. I remember thinking of how dedicated and loving you took care of him.
Shukri?s will always be with you; his spirit and good will be part of you no matter where you are. I wanted to let you know that you have our family?s condolences, and our hearts are truly saddened. We have included Shukri and you in our prayers. May God give you strength.

We will deeply miss Shukri!

Shukri and the word extraordinary come together all the time. What an exceptional person! He is blessed with an incredibly loving and caring family. Shukri’s personality is the most beautiful and pure one that one can ever meet. When I think of Shukri, I see a beautiful and radiant smile. Even during his sickness, his smile lit his face. His humbleness grew proportionally with his success. His career has been exceptional, and I am sure he touched many lives throughout his career. What a gentleman! He is the perfect servant and his deep faith in Jesus Christ gave him incredible courage through his illness. The past 20 months have been a journey of love and faith, and we all felt so much awe towards Shukri and all of you. What an inspirational man! Shukri’s qualities are definitely those of a Saint! He left too soon, and we will all miss him tremendously. I know that he is still smiling down on his loving family.

Anita Garrison, MSN, RN, SCNR

September 29, 2008

Dr. Khuri will remain forever in my heartas a great person and one who was very influential in my life.. As one of the original 44 nurses that started NSQIP with him, I feel honed & blessed to have known him. His spirit, enthusiasm and respect for others made NSQIP what it is today and he is truly missed.
