Sidney Manders Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 29 to Oct. 30, 2013.
Manders, Sidney V. Sr. of Lakeville, went to be with the Lord Sunday morning October 27th. He is preceded in death by his parents, Sidney and Matilda; his sisters, Margaret and June; brothers, Bill and Jim. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Dee; children, Dusty (Elaine), Wendy (Steven), Terry (Lori) and Jody (Jeff); 10 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; his sister, Gloria (Wally) Gerard and brother, Dave (Val) Manders. Sid grew up in St Paul. His hard work ethic began when he was young, delivering newspapers and working in a butcher shop. He joined the Air Force and flew a B17 during WWII, being shot down 3 times. The last time he was taken prisoner in Germany and suffered many forms of torture. It was his strong faith that would help him survive, returning to the states at a mire 90 pounds and with damaged legs. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and many other accolades. He met and married his beautiful wife Dee on June 11, 1949. With the Love of his wife and his faith he was able to overcome his pain and injuries to start an extraordinary life. He owned a Mobil Station on Selby Ave. in St Paul and from there founded Manders Diesel Repair a Mack Truck Dealership in Lakeville, a business that still beares his name and carries on the traditions while keeping up with the times. Over the years in the business he made many lifelong friendships that he cherished. His greatest accomplishment in his long life was the family that he and Dee raised with Love. With the strength he has shown them they will be able to carry on and continue to make him proud. The family would like to thank all of the nurses at Fairview Ridges Hospital that took care of him in his final days and tell them "Have a Nice Day!" Our thoughts and prayers are with Sid's family. Fond memories of Sid's booming voice as he and my dad would talk about all the great things Mack trucks could do. I was always fascinated by his heroics in World War II. May he rest in peace.

Sorry to hear we lost Sid. I have lots of good memories in the early 80s of Sid dropping in to visit when I was at Longman Truck Sales, Savage, MN and swaping stories with Irv. Who could forget the Mercedes Benz with the bulldog on the hood. Irv always said, "If Mack made Post Toasties that's all Sid would eat for breakfast."
