Sidney Schultz Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 12 to Jan. 16, 2022.
SIDNEY SCHULTZ, M.D.
Sidney Schultz, M.D. died on January 6, 2022. His life covered more than one century, and Sidney lived a life of distinction in every respect. He was a doctor of renown, a true companion and dear friend, and a man who excelled in the art of living.
Sidney lived 36,821 days from his birth in 1921. And although not every day was momentous, the sum total of that remarkable length of time is a vivid picture of a life filled with noteworthy accomplishment, deep satisfaction, and enduring impressions.
Sidney was an orthopedic surgeon (or a "sterile carpenter" as he often referred to his profession). Originally from New Jersey, he finished his medical residency in Louisiana and then came to Albuquerque for the simplest of reasons: a doctor here offered him $25/month more than either Tulane University or another doctor in the South. Within a few years he began his own medical practice. Sid truly was a medical professional. His talents in the operating room were well-known, and he performed one of the first total hip replacements in New Mexico. But it was his compassion, his focus, his empathy for the concerns of his patients, and his ability to inspire trust that set him apart as a physician. After recovering from spinal surgery, one patient penned a poem that Sid kept on his office wall: A patient's plea:When I am stricken knee, hip and thigh Or wounded grievously do I lie. I pray that God will send to meSchultz's artistic surgery!
In addition to his medical prowess, Sidney enjoyed an unparalleled reputation as a medical expert witness. He was perceptive, fair and persuasive. He also had an astounding ability to explain the intricacies of anatomy and medical procedures in an easily understandable manner without being arrogant or condescending.
Of his 100+ years, Sidney spent nearly 75 of them married to his partner and confidant, Ruth. They met at summer camp when they were 12, and they remained together until Ruth's death several years ago. Theirs was a love for the ages. They shared a passion for Western and Native American art. They travelled to every continent and gazed at nearly every wonder of the modern world. They enjoyed each other's company in all settings imaginable.
To have known Sid was to have beheld his sartorial elegance. Sidney's wardrobe was almost beyond description: there were the infamous red, white and blue plaid pants he wore to each Indian Market. The jaw-dropping array of sport coats, slacks and sweaters in a vast range of colors, fabrics and patterns. And his astounding collection of bolo ties and buckles. Sid's dashing appearance cut a memorable figure in almost any setting.
Then there was his humor. Ever ready with a tale, his repertoire of all kinds of humor – from puns to riddles to stories – seemed endless. His ability to regale a gathering with Yiddish jokes was marvelous.
Sidney enjoyed fine wine and good food, but was equally happy at a Dairy Queen – so long as he was with people he enjoyed. He was the best company at home and the most interesting of travelling companions. He relished in sharing his love of art. He enjoyed a good party regardless of whether he was with other doctors, Native American artists and their families, or the friends of his children. And he took great naches (pride or enjoyment) from the time he spent with his family, including his 3 children and their spouses, 4 grandchildren and their spouses, and 4 great-grandchildren.
100 years, 9 months, 21 days is an exceptionally long time to live. Sidney lived them well, and he will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to share any of that time with him. Because of public health concerns, a memorial service will be held at a later time.

A patient of Sidney's for 52 years, he was a mentor, father figure and most importantly, a friend. He had the challenge of telling my mother on the day of my birth that my birth defect would warrant the amputation of my leg. He sat on the edge of the hospital bed and held the hand of my Mother as he shared the news with a tear cascading down his cheek. He was a man of great compassion. He was there for me through 17 surgeries and helped me when my father passed away. When I brought a special woman home with me from college to meet my Mom, I also made a special trip to visit Sidney to introduce him to the woman I was going to marry. There is a shadow over my heart as I learned of Sidney leaving this earth, but I am smiling knowing that he has been reunited with Ruth. Thank you Sidney for every gift you provided my family through your presence in our life. I hope to learn of the memorial service as I will sure travel back to Albuquerque to celebrate your amazing life.

I met Sidney and Ruth in 1976. I was the young Sales Manager at the Volvo dealership at that time. They bought a new car and as I moved the license plate from the trade in to the new car, I asked Sidney the meaning of the plate, "Y the T". After some moments trying to avoid answering, he finally told me.
When I was a child, my friends and I would play by spelling our names backwards as kids often still do, I became "Yendis". As days went by we added rhymes to our backward spelling. I became Yendis the Tremendous.
The name from his childhood stayed in his mind.. Yendis the Tremendous became the license number, Y the T.
After more than forty years in the car business, this is one of my very favorite antidotes. When Ruth passed, I was very sorry, with Yendis´s passing, "Y the T" will be greatly missed.

In 1957 at the age of 7 I was hit by a car walking from school along with 7 other children. I had compound fractures of both legs and a broken collarbone along with multiple injuries. I was thrown about 50 feet. Dr. Schultz was my doctor and had to wait 3 days for me to regain consciousness to work on me. I was in leg casts up to my hips and casts around my upper torso. All I remember was when I would go and he would recast me as I wore them for 3 months. I made a full recovery and have lived a good life. I remember when they took my leg casts off for good and my skin was still black on my legs and he said, walk. I am now 71 and thanks to Dr. Schultz i had a normal life. Thank God for his care and expertise in repairing my broken body. My sister re.inded me yesterday of him and how my dad would send her to his office to make monthly payments. I lost all memory prior to my accident, but i do remember all the office visits and follow up. I will keep him in my prayers each night and thank God that he saved this little boy. God bless you Dr. Sidney Schultz.

I was blessed to have Dr. Schultz on call at the hospital in 1975. He had been in emergency surgery all night when I arrived with a leg injury like the one Tiger Woods experienced. I met him in his surgical scrubs and he said "I´ll do everything I can to save your leg". Five hours later he had done his magic. When I woke he came into my room dressed to the nines with a lot of Native American jewelry on. I asked who he was as I had only seen him in scrubs and he laughed saying he had saved my leg. After a bone graft and almost a year and many casts I was able to walk. I was so fortunate to have him as my doctor and know we all were better for having him around for 100 years.

Janet and I were classmates starting in 1st grade and I grew up knowing both of her parents. Wonderful people. Dr Schultz operated on my sister´s knee probably about 60 years ago. I of course remember when Janet and her mother passed on. My condolences to all the Schultz family.
