Sonia MATTHEWS Obituary
It is with great sadness that the family of Sonia Matthews (nee Serrao) announce her passing at home on Tuesday, May 31, 2022. Sonia will be lovingly remembered by her husband Jerry and her two boys, Ryan and William. Sonia is survived by her parents Domenico and Eleonora Serrao and her siblings Antonietta (Gino) Cimetta, Maddalena (Marino) Gagliardi, Pasqualino (Connie) Serrao and Patricia Serrao. Sonia will also be missed by many other relatives and friends. Sonia ended her working career as a full-time instructor at Mohawk College in Hamilton where she enjoyed working with her colleagues and took great interest in her students. The family would like to thank all the medical professionals in Hamilton, Toronto and London, Ontario who tried, thru Covid, to change this outcome. Visitation will be held at P.X. Dermody Funeral Homes on Friday, June 3rd from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be offered at St. Catharine of Sienna (Our Lady of Lourdes site) on Saturday, June 4th at 10:30 a.m. Burial to take place at Resurrection Cemetery. Thank you to all... especially to Sonia´s work colleagues and students who posted such warm and kind thoughts of our beloved sister, daughter, mother, wife, aunt ..beautiful Sonia. Sonia would have been very touched and moved by your warm thoughts and sentiments. Sonia enjoyed teaching, but it was her students she loved most of all! She strived to make a difference with each one of her students, encouraging them to reach for the stars! Anyone who knew Sonia was infected by her beautiful smile, thoughtfulness and kind heart. Sonia was a very courageous soul, who worked hard and went above and beyond to help whenever she could. She took on new challenges very easily, with a sweet smile.
She taught some of the more challenging technical courses at the college, which required many demos and assignments to complete. She was excited when her class sizes grew year to year (reaching 75+) and online learning took over, she worked hard to prepare her online lessons and video classes with great detail to help her students feel like they were still face to face in a classroom. She dedicated many weekends to marking over 200 assignments, ensuring her deadlines were met, and was always available by email to students. One of her biggest joys was in organizing charity functions with her students, which helped raised much needed funds for the college. She was so proud and took great joy in seeing how dedicated and generous of their time her students were, and all the hard work they did together for others.
We miss Sonia dearly... we know she made a big impact on many! Her kind heart and thoughtful soul lives on forever in her two boys ... and in the lives of everyone she met.

What a tragic loss for our Office Admin. dept. at Mohawk. Sonia was our super-smart Excel guru who was super organized and super knowledgeable in everything she taught. We are all better for having known her. My sympathies to her sisters and brother and especially to her parents who should never have had to go through this.

I was a former student of Sonia´s, she was a wonderful teacher, one that could adjust to my learning style. She always made things make sense with her patience and understanding.

My deepest condolences to your family. I am so very sorry to hear about Sonia. I had the privilege to have her as my Professor a few years ago. She was incredibly good at her job and taught me so much in our short time together. Sonia was so encouraging and always greeted me with the brightest smile. I am truly grateful to have met her.
