Giardino, Sophie, 74, died peacefully at home after her 17 year courageous battle with breast cancer on March 20, 2013. Sophie's faith and devotion to the Blessed Mother gave her comfort and strength during this journey. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Tony, children, Elena, Joey, Jimmy (Carol), Drew (Christine), and Anthony, daughter- in-law, Terry, and grandchildren, Jacob, Sidney, Julia, Ava, Mara, Sarah; her brother, Dominick Perrini and brother- in-law, Dr. Vincent (Elaine) Giardino, nieces, nephew, cousins, dear friends, classmates and her Breast Cancer Support Group. Sophie was born in New York City to her proud, late parents, Giuseppe and Rita Perrini. After attending Catholic grammar school and high school in Manhattan, she graduated from Bellevue School of Nursing in 1959. She completed her B.S in Nursing from Hunter College, M.A. in Nursing, and PH.D. (ABD) in Nursing from New York University. She held a number of positions at Bellevue Hospital including Staff Nurse, Supervisor, Assistant Director for Maternal/Child Health, Assistant Director for Emergency Services and Associate Executive Director of Nursing. She was Assistant Clinical Instructor, Pediatrics at Bellevue School of Nursing and also Instructor in the Evening RN program at Hunter Bellevue School of Nursing. Sophie was also the weekend Administrator at Lenox Hill Hospital while taking PH.D. coursework. She left Bellevue to take the position of Vice President of Nursing at Colombia Presbyterian Hospital and became Executive Vice President two years later. Overall Sophie's nursing experience included Emergency Services, Critical Care, Pediatrics, Maternal Child Health, Geriatrics and Administration. Sophie was a volunteer at the Holy Cross Cancer Center and very active in the Breast Cancer Support Group and American Cancer Society programs. Sophie was an angel to all the patients receiving treatment at Holy Cross and most of all an inspiration to the Breast Cancer support group. Weekly we received her wise, calm words and funny anecdotes to help us survive. What Grace Sophie possessed which carried her to Heaven. God Bless her family especially Tony, always at her side.

Sophie: A hero, an angel, are some titles to add to
her titles after wife, mother, daughter, sister, grandmother, aunt, and friend. Her 17 year battle
with cancer was a valiant fight to win over the disease. As a key member of the breast cancer support group she was loved greatly and will be missed intensely. Both sophie and Tony always opened their hearts and their world to all the cancers survivors. There are no words to express
our great loss. We can gain from the things she tried to teach us.Live life, love, and be a blessing to others.Sophie we will miss the wonderful wings you spread to take us under. Now you have a new set of angel wings and we have an angel among us. love you Del

May God Bless you, Sophie, and may HE give Tony strength, courage and comfort in the coming days. You will always be one of my dearest friends. I will never forget the serious, sad, joyous, funny and unbelievable incidents shared through the 57 years that we were fortunate to have experienced together. Please pray for us as we will pray for you. With Love...

Sophie and I sat near each other in every class because of our last names. She was so funny and we shared memories of our Italian childhoods and recipes. We had fun on the weekends as well. Wished I could have made the last reunion. Being unable to travel makes the short ride from Miami to Ft. Lauderdale seem like a trek across the country. My sympathy to her family and friends.

Anthony Giordano and the entire family.

I did not keep in touch with my Bellevue classmates. I wished I had known Sophie better. She was an amazing woman from what I hear. May her memory be for a blessing. Sylvie Heyman (Sylvia Grey Tobin)

How does one summarize and say goodbye to a 57 year friendship.? We lived almost side by side in Bellevue Nursing School from '56 to '59. With Marie Walz, Valerie Smith and Claudette Norris, we became the “Big Five”. We sat through classes together, all in the last half of the class. We met each other's families, we went to each other's homes. We were capped and graduated together. Sophie and I went to Marie, Claudette's and Val's weddings and were the single ones for a long time. We met Claudette the first week of December and went to the concert at South Street Seaport. We kept in touch and did Christmas cards every year. We married within a year of each other and visited in Florida together, we went on a Baltic Cruise together. They visited us in Ireland and loved it. After my husband died they called with an apartment in Florida, they fixed it up for me, they almost furnished it completely for me. We had Opera and Broadway Across America subscriptions together. We went to Peter Pan for breakfast 2 or 3 mornings a week and Birthday dinners (2 days apart) at Zuckerello's . I could go on and on but must say goodbye to my dear, dear friend Sophie. I love you and will remember you always.

With love, all things endure, for though they may pass from this earth, they live on in the hearts of those who have loved them.
