Spencer Egglefield Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 7 to Oct. 8, 2007.
ELIZABETHTOWN -- Spencer Alexander Egglefield, 84, of Elizabethtown, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loved ones on Friday, Oct. 5, 2007. Spencer was born in St. Huberts, N.Y., on Jan. 19, 1923, to Spencer R. and Evangeline (Nye) Egglefield.
Spencer joined the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II as a night fighter pilot. He returned to Elizabethtown in 1949, where he took over operation of Egglefield Brothers Ford, the third generation of the family-owned business. He successfully ran the business until 1979, when he took a position with the New York State Motor Vehicle Department.
He married Ellen Hurley of Plattsburgh on Dec. 28, 1983. They enjoyed their homes, friends and families in Elizabethtown and Port Orange, Fla.
Spencer was appointed Essex County Treasurer in 1978, where he served four consecutive terms until his retirement in 1995. After retirement, Spen and Ellen opened a mini resort, Schroon Lake Place, on the shores of Schroon Lake and enjoyed many wonderful times with family, friends and patrons.
In addition to being a self-taught musician and avid golfer, his love of antique cars and their restoration occupied much of his time over the years. Spencer was a member of the Elks, Kiwanis, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, was commander of the "Awkward Squad," chair of the Lake Champlain/Lake George Regional Planning Committee, the Lake Champlain Canal Board and past president of the Whiteface Chapter of Antique Automobile Club of America.
Spencer was predeceased by both of his parents; and his first wife, Meredith.
Spencer is survived by his wife of 24 years, Ellen; a brother, Lew (Bud) Egglefield and his wife, Marijane, of Elizabethtown; his children, Dennis and his wife, Joan Egglefield, Deidre Egglefield and her companion John, Wendy Daniels and her husband, Judd, Patricia and her husband, Paul Baker, Kari Egglefield; stepchildren, Christine (Mark) Mero, Lynda (Thomas) Dubkowski, Sandra (Richard) Perry, Patrick (Danielle) Hurley; 16 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Friends are invited to attend a memorial service at the United Church of Christ (Stone Church) at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2007. A graveside service will immediately follow at the Essex County Veterans Cemetery in Wadhams.
In lieu of flowers, the family will be establishing a scholarship fund in Spencer's name.

I think this is a wonderful tribute to my grandfather, as we called him "Toad". I can't say as I have ever met a more inspirational man. I greatly miss my grandfather and am so pleased and blessed that I had the honor of having him in my life for 32 years. He will be so greatly missed. What you have all wrote is such a testimony to the kind of man he was and how many people from all over the country and world, he's touched. We love you Toad..

Dear Ellen, Dennis, Deidre, Trish, Bud, and Marijane,

My rich memories of Spen over the nearly three decades I worked in Elizabethtown and lived in Westport are precious to me. He was truly a "one-off," and I'm proud to have known him. His humor, his kindness, his music, and his loyalty were exceptional. Melissa and I share your loss.

Dear Bud,Denny,Deidre,Wendy, and Trish; I'am very sorry to hear of the passing of Spen.It was a pleasure to know such a wonderful man. He was alot of fun to be around. As a child growing up in Keene, I can remember coming home from a family visit to find a new Ford sitting in the driveway, we knew that Spen had been in town and that he thought that it was time my parents had a new car. Well, sure enough he was right, the next day off to E'Town my parents would go to sign the papers. Those were the days. Spen will be greatly missed by all. Keep him in your hearts forever. The Schroon Lake Place

October 9, 2007

Dear Ellen and family,
We are so sorry. Spence was a wonderful man, and we will miss him. Seems like just yesterday, he handed Kyle that golf club and ball, and challenged him to be able to bounce it like Tiger Woods. How surprised was he when we came back to “The Place” the following year and Kyle had mastered it!. I remember he couldn’t wait to take Kyle up to the golf course to show everyone. Kyle still has that special club and will cherish it forever. Oh how we loved coming to the lake every year, and cried every time we had to leave. Joe and Kyle couldn’t wait to get there knowing they would spend time just sitting and talking with Spen. I only wish we could have spent more time sitting on the porch, in the sun looking out over the water talking about old times, cars, golf and whatever else came up in conversation. I know it’s hard for you to come back to “The Place”, but please know you are welcome anytime. Spence will be forever in our hearts and we thank God for the honor and pleasure of knowing him and spending the time with him that we did. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and family at this time.

Ellen & Family. I was deeply saddened to hear of Spence's passing. The memories I have of him are many, but the times at my parents place, the Cobble Hill Inn, and the rides in the old cars over the mountain to Purdy's stand out the most. Spence will be sorely missed but he is in a better place now. God Bless you all.
