STAMATIOS "SAM"
Our treasured Stamatios "Sam" Smalis, age 74, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully with his wife at his side on Thursday, July 27, 2017, at Family Hospice. He was born on Lipsos Island, Greece in 1943 to the late Vasilia Paradise and the late Mavroudis Smalis and immigrated to the United States in 1969 where he lived the rest of his life. Sam was a driven, passionate, intelligent, loving and compassionate man. While growing up and living in Greece, Sam attended seminary school, served in the Greek Army, played semi-pro soccer and then traveled the world while working in the merchant marines. When he immigrated to the United States in 1969, he began working in the industrial painting industry. In 1985 he started his own business, Superior Painting Co. and that became his most profound passion. He enjoyed working every day until the very end. Sam was also an amazing, devoted and compassionate husband, father, brother and grandfather. Survived by his adoring wife, Linda Smalis; his loving children, Elefteria Smalis Thomas (Nick) and Nikolai Barlow; his loving brothers, Iakovos (Maria), Anastasios, Kosmas (Debbie) and the late Theotokes Smalis; his loving grandchildren, Curtis and Zachary Barlow, Coby Vogt, Ruby, Carly and Devyn; his loving nieces and nephews, Michael Smalis, Maria Sfanos and Leah Edwards; his loving brother and sister-in-law, Larry Paddock and Janie Rateau. Friends will be received at JOHN A. FREYVOGEL SONS, INC., 4900 Centre Avenue at Devonshire Street (freyvogelfuneralhome.com) on Sunday 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. and on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until an 11:00 a.m. Service in the funeral home.

Dear Linda and Family

Visiting Pittsburgh this week and heard about Sam. So sorry for your loss, prayers and many thoughts are with you.
Sam and I spent many years working on the contracts for Trumbull and P.J. Dick together (as you well know) and he was always so pleasant with that wonderful smile of his and great personality.

Stay well and take care of yourself.

Linda, our friendship with you and Sam is one that will always be treasured and we hope that you know that it will continue with you as we cry, laugh and love each other with the wonderful memories of how our lives were touched by Sam. It was truly and honor to count Sam as a friend and we are so blessed that we got to spend 12 beautiful days and nights with you in Greece along with many years of friendship. Sam is an inspiration to many in his sincerity, integrity and model of achievement. Our heart breaks for you and your family at this time but we cherish all that Sam brought into our lives and will forever hold it dear in our hearts.
