Stephen EARLE Obituary

Published by Ottawa Citizen on May 5, 2018.
EARLE, Dr. Stephen M. March 20, 1952 - May 1, 2018 After a long challenging fight with cancer, Steve quietly succumbed to the disease. Steve had a strong family focus, a family that always cared for and supported him. Steve leaves behind his partner and wife of 30 years, Marg, his stepdaughter Jennifer (Dave) and his two wonderful grandchildren, Cameron and Spencer, who he spent many happy times with. Steve refers to his brother John (Julie) as the best "big brother" anyone could ask for and he loved him dearly. Steve held his niece Jennifer and his two nephews, Jeff and Jamie, very close to his heart and they completed his world in many ways. His cousins Sue and Bill were special as well. Steve was also lucky enough to be surrounded by many amazing friends who were his extended family as well as many caring neighbours. Steve practiced dentistry in Ottawa for 39 years and began his career in 1976 practicing with his Dad, Jack Earle, before going on his own. He enjoyed the friendships and long relationships that grew from his practice. He especially enjoyed his nineteen years helping the Ottawa 67's hockey club with his dental services. Steve found it difficult to give up dentistry and retire but his health issues demanded he do so. He was very lucky to have a good support team around him at his Gilmour St. clinic and he wishes to extend a special thank you to Mary Lou Talbot. Steve was known to be a huge dog lover and always had a favourite Vizsla pup (thanks JR) by his side for many many years. Steve would also like to thank Dr. Brian Dick whose amazing care extended his life and in many ways he was far more than just his family physician. Steve would like to thank his exceptional friends, who walked with him every step of the way during his fight with cancer. Words cannot express the difference they made! At Steve's request there will be no official services.

I just heard that Dr. Earle passed away! He was our family's dentist since the early '80's! He was compassionate and dedicated; we trusted him explicitly! He was always more interested in our family's dental health than money! He was just the very best dentist and human being!

Dr. Stephen Earle was my family dentist for most of my childhood and teen years until my 30s. He was a very friendly man, and a trusted professional. I am shocked to learn of his passing, but wish the deepest peace upon his family. Dr. Earle will always be a part of my memories growing up and going to the dentist.

Very sad to hear about the passing of Steve. Both you and Steve made me feel at home in Ottawa many years ago, when I lived there. Steve was a great guy, who loved life and lived it to the fullest. Both my father, Jerry Wowchuk and I will miss him.

I recently heard of the extremely shocking passing of Dr. Earle and I feel so incredibly sad for everyone who was blessed to know him.

Our family happens to be some of his first patients and although that was back in 1976, I can still clearly see that day as if it happened yesterday.

Dr. Earle and his father were kind enough to accept our family who were on social assistance and back then seeing a dentist wasnt something easily granted by the Govt assistance program. The Earles, especially Dr. Stephen, opened their arms to us and looked after all our dental requirements. I have never forgotten how wonderful they were.

I myself was a scared young girl of 11 who didnt know what to expect but whatever they did, it made me a patient for life. I and my younger sister continued to see Dr. Earle until his retirement and although some thought I was weird, I absolutely LOVED going to the dentist!

Some of my fondest memories are when Dr. Earle would stop by after my cleaning to take a look at my teeth. We always had some great laughs and quite often it was over his comments of Wow, nice teeth. I do good work! or Whos your dentist??. He always put a smile on my face.

At one point I had lost my job, so funds were tight for me, but I wasnt going to give up my joyous dentist appointment. Knowing that I was unemployed Dr. Earle cut me some slack on the cost of my visit. It was extremely unexpected but typical of him. He had a very kind heart. I have never forgotten what he did for me.

He surrounded himself with very kind, friendly staff who felt like family to us. We always enjoyed laughing with the gals as well. I cant imagine how heartbroken they all must be. I know Im very heartbroken.

Dearest Marg, words cant express how heavy my heart is for you especially. Im so very, very sorry for your loss. He was a wonderful person and loved by so many.

My deepest sympathies go out to all his family.

Rest in peace my dear dentist friend and remember, every time I flash my pearly whites, its in memory of you.

We've just learned this very sad news. Dr. Earle was a wonderful dentist, kind, thoughtful and sensitive, with a nice sense of humour, making it easy for us to handle even difficult procedures. We were so happy to find him. Our deepest condolences to Marg -- always so gracious to us -- and all the family. May the beautiful memories be with you forever.

Marg and Family,
I just learned last nite of Stephen's passing.. I am so very sorry .. he really was a wonderful person and dentist .. He has been my Dentist for 38 years out of his 39 years .. I use to joke how I was one of the early ones.. He made it fun for my daughter to visit the dentist. He made a difficult appointment easier. I was sad when he retired I am sorry I did not know he was ill but understand. May his memories bring you all a comfort.

I knew Dr. Earle my whole life. He was my dentist from childhood and I have many fond memories at the clinic. He would often remind me of the time I hopped on the chair and a pile of sand came out of my shoes. He is the reason that I still love the going to the dentist to this day. He will be missed dearly. Sending lots of love to all his family and friends.

Dear Marg, Jenn and the entire "Dr Earle dental family",

We recently heard of Dr Earle's unfortunate illness and passing, and we are so sorry for your great personal and professional loss. Dr Earle was a wonderful dentist and a kind man; his employees and work environment certainly reflected Dr Earle's good qualities. Our family much appreciated his gentle and attentive care over the years.

May good memories of happy times spent together help to comfort you.

We are thinking of you,

Dear Marg and Jennifer,
Guy and I were so sorry to read of Stephen's death. We had no idea he was ill. I had seen Jennifer about a week earlier and asked about Stephen and you, Marg, and she said everyone was fine. I did detect a note of hesitation in her voice though. I have known Stephen since we moved back to Ottawa before he even became our dentist. He will be greatly missed

My condolences to Margaret, Jennifer and the family and friends of Dr Earle. I was fortunate to meet him when I was delivering the mail to his dental office and over the past year, to his home as well. He was such a friendly and down to earth guy and he always made my day with a quick chat or a wave from his car as he passed me on my mail route. Miss you Doc, rest in peace.

Dear Marg and Family,
I was so shocked and saddened to hear of Stephen's passing. I had no idea he was ill and just hoped he was enjoying his well deserved retirement. I was a patient of Dr. Earle since the mid 1980's. He was such a gentle and caring person. It felt like going to see a family friend rather than a visit to the dentist. So terribly sorry for your loss and wish you my very deepest sympathy.

Dear Marg, Jennifer and family,
My sincere sympathy for the loss of a great man. He was not only a very gentle man, he was very kind, honest and always happy to see you. I recall Dr. Earle coming up to me with a serious look and say that the flag was going to fly half mass that day. I looked at him startled which made him laugh, he said he found my first cavity (I was 40 years old). May he rest in peace. He will be missed by hundreds of people who's lives he touched.

Steve was an amazing friend and neighbour. He was always up for a visit, that sometimes lasted longer than expected, but it never got boring. His positive attitude and mischievous streak will be sorely missed by his neighbours. I was so lucky to be back in Canada in March so we could have those last visits, even though he knew the end was near, he was as positive and cheerful as if he did not have a worry in the world. We were lucky to have known Steve for 12 years, and more bottles of wine than I can count.

Dear Marg,Jennifer & Family

I am so saddened to hear of your loss, and am still trying to believe it. I was a patient from the start of his practice and know how disappointed I was to hear of his retirement- how selfish I was. It was always such a pleasure to go to your office and chat with Marg, Mary-Lou and Jennifer, it was like seeing old friends, and of course Dr Earle was such an amazing Dentist- he managed to keep my teeth from all falling out!!! And he was always so pleasant, just like a good friend. I know that you all will have wonderful memories to sustain you in the months and years ahead, but do understand the emptiness that will manifest itself, having been through a similar experience . I will always have a special place in my heart for all of you. Be strong, and take comfort in the knowledge that he is no longer suffering

We are deeply saddened at Steve's passing. He was a consummate professional of the highest level and created an atmosphere that felt safe and reassuring regardless of the level of treatment required. His immeasurable energy was remarkable, as was his signature smile. Matt and I always enjoyed our golf games, especially the longer drive competition, and the 19th hole lunch with Marg. Steve had a "joie de vivre" to be envied, and it was infectious, fortunately for all who knew him.

I am shattered to learn this awful news of Stephen and had no idea he had been ill. Just last May I had bumped into Marg and Stephen outside my local Loblaws and he gave me a massive hug and was in great spirits and told me he was golfing and thoroughly enjoying his retirement. Always a good friend to me, even giving me extra NAC tickets he and Marg had but couldn't go to, full of chats and I liked to tease him that I'd sent about 40 people to him so he should give me a discount he DID give me a free crown once, out of friendship which was incredibly generous. We had lots of laughs over the years as I was one of his very first patients after his Father asked me if I'd like to transfer to Stephen for my 4 front teeth to be crowned as he'd just done his Father's and they were fabulous! Mine were too and he was such a fantastic and gentle dentist. I'd been his patient since 1978. He was also a great supporter of dog and cat rescue organizations (they came to a dinner/auction and also to the Ottawa Little Theatre fund raisers I had helped organize for Friends of Abandoned Pets, brought his mum to the latter and generously supported the FOAP dog walk fund raiser too) and loved his own beautiful and loving dogs dearly. Poor Marg, lovie I know you will be bereft, but I know Jennifer and others will be there for you. I send you big hugs. Many, many people in Ottawa will miss this lovely man. I'm so sad.
