Stephen Granville-Smith Obituary
At the age of five, his family moved from Brooklyn Heights, NY to Rowayton, CT. After attending Brien McMahon High School in Norwalk, CT for his freshman year, Stephen transferred to Northwood School in Lake Placid, NY to continue his passion for playing hockey. He graduated with a bachelor's degree from Clark University in Worcester, MA in 1985. After graduating college, Stephen worked in the real estate industry for over three decades, focusing on investment sales in the public storage and commercial building space over the past fifteen years. In addition to his passion for hockey and real estate, Stephen enjoyed the outdoors, particularly the ocean, skiing and going on long walks.
Stephen always felt blessed by his strong community of family and friends. He will be remembered as a joyful and optimistic person who was able to inspire and lift up those around him. He is survived by his mother Maureen O'Hara Granville-Smith of Rowayton, CT, his three brothers, Richard Granville-Smith of Stamford, CT, David (Elizabeth) Granville-Smith of New York, NY, Peter Granville-Smith of Rowayton, CT and his two nephews, Brian Granville-Smith and Gregory Granville-Smith of New York, NY. The family is planning a memorial service and celebration of Stephen's life later this fall. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

My mother Regina and I are so saddened to hear of Steve's death. We have the fondest memories of spending time with Steve and his family in Rowayton many years ago. Our father's were roommates in NYC before moving to CT and having their families. And my mother cherished her friendship with Maureen, whom she misses. We are sending hugs and all our love, Pilar and Regina.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Smitty's passing, and I want to express my sincerest condolences to his family. Smitty was one of my best friends, and I´m struggling to believe he's no longer with us.
We first met back in the late 1990s, and from that point on, we created a lifetime of memories together. Some of my fondest moments were our travels across Europe, from the more popular spots like Copenhagen to the unusual adventures we had in places like Lithuania, Poland, and Hungary. I´ll never forget the Millennium celebration in London in 2000 - such a blast with Smitty and our group. More recently, I was lucky enough to spend time with him again when he flew out to the Bay Area in 2022. We shared a special day in Napa, and I´m grateful for that moment.
One of the most meaningful experiences was my recent visit to Long Beach. Smitty always loved being near the water, whether in Miami or Long Beach, and it was clear how much that setting brought him joy. We spent a couple of wonderful days together, took a train into New York City, and he showed me Grand Central Station, a place I hadn´t visited before. That was just like Smitty - always finding ways to share new experiences.
I already miss him so much. Smitty was more than a friend; he was like family. His adventurous spirit, his humor, and his genuine kindness will always stay with me.

My most sincere condolences. I knew Steve from Miami. He always had a funny, uplifting comment during our chats. He was a passionate hard worker with a loving attitude. He will be very missed.

I am heartbroken. Smitty was a very close friend. We spent thousands of hours together. From Boston, Italy, Belize, etc. He was so good to me. We did business together for a few years in Westport, CT. It wasn't work. It was fun! I was proud to do business with him. He always ended being kind and fair. I have wonderful memories because of him. I love you Smitty...

My condolences to Steve´s loved ones. Smitty and I stayed in touch off and on, over the years since Clark. He was a true original. I enjoyed him, found him funny and so sharp-- sharp witted and sharp tongued;). I loved that about him. I saw him for dinner a few years ago and planned to go visit him in Long Beach. Waited too long. May his memory be a blessing.

Absolutely heart broken hearing of the passing of Steve. Smitty as he was know to the many of his

So sorry to hear about Steve. Of course I knew him as Smitty. Although I graduated from Clark in '81, I knew Smitty pretty well through the hockey team. He and I reconnected about 3 some years ago. I live near Denver and he was in town working on his storage space acquisitions. I picked him up and we spent half the day going over our lives. We went to my favorite hockey rink's restaurant and had some dinner and a couple of beers. After that we kept in touch sharing odds and ends. Earlier this year he started sending memes with Snoopy saying "happy weekend" or "summertime" or "surf's up". He sent them all summer. He never mentioned that he was hurting. What a tough, handsome man! My condolences to all his family and friends.
