Stephen Higgins Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 2, 2024.
With heavy hearts and profound sadness we announce the death of Stephen Lowell Higgins, 74, on June 18, 2024. Steve was born on December 1, 1949 in Rushville, Indiana to Lowell Higgins and Mary Ann (Kennedy) Higgins.

Steve was an avid sailor and car enthusiast, having worked alongside his dad and brothers in the Higgins Service Station as a teenager. Whether watching in the grandstands or at home on TV, no Indy 500 occurred without Steve's observant gaze. A graduate of Indiana University, he spent his career as a retail executive, specializing in visual merchandising and marketing. Through his work, he traveled the world filling up multiple passports with stamps denoting a myriad of adventures. Despite his many exotic travels, his greatest joy came from being with his wife, children, and grandchildren.

Steve will be remembered as a loyal, exceptionally funny, and generous man whose guidance made a lasting impact in the lives of his loved ones. No flower arrangement will be looked at without knowing that he could create one superior, no Phil Collins song will be heard without softly singing along, and no Bill Murray movie seen without an epic belly laugh.

He was preceded in death by his father Lowell, his older brother David, and his younger brother Paul. He is survived by his devoted wife Cindy, his daughters Beth Milam (Todd Thompson), Caryn Higgins, Jocelyn McGee (Carl), his sons, Zachary Higgins (Sydnee), Greg Hersperger, two grandchildren Scarlett and Eli McGee, his mother Mary Ann, and many other beloved family and friends.

A private burial was held in accordance with Steve's wishes.

I just tried calling my old boss, Steve Higgins and it said, this phone number has been disconnected. I immediately googled him because when I spoke to him in the early summer he sounded frail. I am so so so saddened to hear of his death. Steve was a GREAT man. When he left the company we worked for in Virginia Beach, I wrote him this note....I will be forever grateful to have worked for such an amazing person!!!
I´m really trying so hard not to be sad. I want you to know how much I have enjoyed working for you every single day. Every time someone asks about my job it always ends with "And I love my boss". I have been fortunate enough to work for many great people and Steve you are at the top of my list. I enjoy the work but because it´s for you, I get true pleasure in my responsibilities. I admire your strength, your knowledge, your patience but most of all I admire you! I love that when you are with someone you make them feel like they are the most important person in the world. You are so respectful and treat everyone equally. You are an amazing leader. You are a confident man who is the first to laugh at himself. It was so hard in the beginning not realizing you made a joke. I would walk out of your office and then chuckle to myself because it would take me a minute to realize you were making a joke with the most serious expression. I am going to miss you tremendously but will cope because I am so happy for you. I am so happy that you will be back with Cindy and the rest of your family. I hope you are able to start your dream and open your business. I know you will be successful with whatever you choose to do. I do hope that you can learn to put yourself first and know that being a little selfish is okay.
Steve, you deserve everything good that comes to you!
Love,

Josie
To Cindy and Steve's family, my condolences and I know you are a better person to have had him in your life! Hang on to those sweet memories!

I´m just finding this sad, but beautiful memorial of my friend, Steve. He was such a gentleman, and devoted family man. I had the pleasure of providing him with insurance services. He would sometimes call me from some pretty unusual places to ask a question, or give me instructions. I loved hearing about his travels, and family. He will be missed. Myrna Pool

I remember the first time I met him. He picked my mother up (Cindy Higgins) for a date. He showed up with flowers and they went on their way. From that day forward our lives forever changed. My mother was the happiest I have ever seen her. I wouldn´t have picked a better husband for her. He truly made her happy. From all the adventures and fun family times he made happen, we created some of the most wonderful memories as a family. He always treated me none other than his daughter. He always held everything together and there was never a worry with him around. From being a husband, a father and being a truly outstanding grandfather as well he will forever hold a special place in all of our hearts. Scarlett and Eli daily love to look at videos of them all together and continue to talk about how much we love and miss our grandpa. Until then we will continue to share stories and videos of all the good times with him. Holidays won´t be the same without his presence but we know he will be with us in spirit. We just thank God for the times we were able to spend with him.

I met the man I called Poppa when I was 5 years old. He and my mother worked together at a department store in Louisville, KY. I went in to his big office and saw every child's dream - a spinning chair. He asked if I wanted to sit in it and I eagerly agreed. He retreated to get me a Diet Coke, my mother's favorite, and brought it back to me as I spun and spun to my heart's content. That was the first day of a lifetime of adventure with a great man whom I loved dearly. My sister and brother and I will spend the rest of our lives fondly recalling these special moments and remembering a man who lived big and loved bigger.
