Steven Crain Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Feb. 9 to Feb. 11, 2024.
Steven Lee Crain, 60, of Bartlett, TN, died February 3, 2024 after a short illness. He is survived by his wife of more than three decades, Kimberly Walker Crain, his daughter, Hannah Crain, and his son, Walker Crain. He was the son of Byron and Virginia Crain of Germantown, TN, and brother of Christopher Crain of Washington, DC; he was preceded in death by his sister, Elizabeth Crain Clark.

Steve was born in Little Rock, AR, and graduated from Germantown High School (1981) and the University of Memphis (1985). His entire professional career was devoted to two local TV stations. For the last 11 years, Steve has been Director of Integrated Media for WREG-TV and later Nexstar Media Group, Inc (WREG-TV / WJKT). Previously, Steve worked for almost 30 years at WMC-TV, first in the news operation as News Operations Manager, Executive Producer, and Managing Editor, and then for 10 years as the station's Internet Sales Director.

Steve was an enthusiastic supporter of the Scouting movement, participating in various adult leadership roles including Assistant Scoutmaster for Troops 368 and 64 of the Chickasaw Council of the Memphis Area. He attended the full week of summer camp at Kia Kima Scout Reservation five times and was immensely proud that his son achieved the rank of Eagle, as Steve had many years earlier. Plans for services are incomplete at this time. In lieu of flowers, donations to the National Park Foundation may be made.

I met Steve when I was a videographer at WMC TV Action News 5 back in the mid 80's. We both worked weekends, as he produced the weekend evening newscasts.
After the 10 o'clock news, we often went about the streets of Memphis in my "news cruiser" - listening to the police scanner, and making the scenes of many fires, and car wrecks - and other "news" events.

I later saw Steve again a few years back when we both happened to be in the local FBI Citizens Class. We reminisced about old times, and the way things used to be. I was blessed to know Steve, and am thankful our paths crossed.

Steve was really great to work with and very competitive. He was the Executive Producer when I worked overnights at WMC. I still have a Christmas ornament from him that I put up on our tree every year. I sort of collect those and glad that I have it. Sandra Hamer Smith
