Dr. Steven Russell Crawford, a man of deep integrity, compassion, and quiet strength, passed away on July 21, 2025, at the age of 76. A dedicated family physician, devoted father, decorated athlete, and true outdoorsman, Steve lived a life rooted in purpose, generosity, and love.
Born in Spokane, Washington, Steve grew up surrounded by the love of his mother (Margaret), step-father(Floreal), and siblings-brothers Michael and John and sister Debbie. Some of his fondest memories as a young man were teaching his little sister how to ride a bike and play tennis. His steady guidance and kind spirit shaped those around him from a young age. His love for the outdoors began early, as he found joy in nature and inspired others to appreciate its beauty.
Steve pursued his passion for science and learning at the University of Idaho, where he double-majored in Biology and Chemistry. He continued on to the University of Washington School of Medicine, where he earned his MD. Following medical school, he served honorably as a physician in the United States Public Health Service in Portland, Oregon, providing care with humility and skill. After his service, he settled in the Portland area, where he established a respected and beloved family medicine practice that spanned decades.
For all his academic and professional accomplishments, Steve was also an outstanding competitor in the world of sport. He was an accomplished skeet and sporting clays shooter, earning multiple U.S. Open gold medals and national recognition for his skill, precision, and dedication to the sport. His athleticism extended to the water as well-he competed in 2-man canoeing competitions, channeling his strength, endurance, and love of challenge into every race.
Steve was most at peace in the wild-hiking, hunting, camping, backpacking, and skiing brought him endless joy. He loved the rhythm of nature and the quiet power of the outdoors. His passion for the wilderness was something he instilled in his children and supported wholeheartedly, especially when it came to horses and any activity under an open sky.
As a foster parent with his loving wife Judy, Steve opened his heart and home to children in need of love, safety, and stability. He raised all his children-biological, adopted and foster-with unwavering support and unconditional love. He taught by example, modeling patience, curiosity, compassion, and strength in every moment.
A constant learner and voracious reader, Steve never stopped seeking to understand more about the world. His generosity extended not just to people, but to animals as well-he was always caring for creatures great and small.
Steve is preceded in death by his mother Margaret Hicks, step-father Floreal Cordoba, his brother Michael Knox, his wife Judith Crawford. He is survived by his siblings, Debbie Cordoba and her partner Stephen Zimic, John Knox and his wife Leslie Knox, his children Daniel Crawford, Rebecca Julien (Scott), Michael Crawford, Mimi Robb (Jeffrey), Stephanie Durbin (Kenneth), Jessi Crawford, Christian Crawford(Sierra), Molly Crawford and Destinee Crawford, and his 13 grand children, all of whom carry his legacy in their hearts and lives. His influence can be seen in every trail hiked, every book read, and every act of kindness done in his memory.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Steve's name to any organization that supports the field of medicine or outdoor pursuits.
Dr. Steven Russell Crawford lived fully, loved deeply, and gave selflessly. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the trails he walked, and the love he so freely gave. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
