Steven Hines Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 27, 2024.
Steven Richard Hines, 67, of Romeo, Michigan, passed away on May 13, 2024, in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. He was born on October 5, 1956, and grew up in St. Clair Shores, Michigan. He was a beloved husband, father, brother, and uncle.

Steve attended Elmira Elementary School and Lake Shore High School. He enlisted in the United States Air Force at the age of 18, became an officer, and rose to the rank of Captain with 20 years of dedicated service in 5 States and in Germany. While in the Air Force he attended Chapman College where he earned a Bachelor's degree in computer science. After retiring from the Air Force, he worked as a computer systems analyst at a major bank, for a national retail chain, and with an auto supplier.

Steve was kind, loving, and easygoing, and always had an adventurous spirit and hardworking nature. In his free time, he loved many outdoor activities including sailing, swimming in the lakes and ocean, kayaking, going for hikes, and exploring national parks, historic battlefields, and other famous places noteworthy in American history. Later he learned to scuba dive, exploring the Florida Keys, Caribbean, and Mexico. He also loved hunting for shark teeth and fossils on the beach and driving his speedboat. He spent his retirement snowbirding, enjoying the beautiful northern summers in Michigan and winters by the ocean in Calabash, North Carolina.

Steve was a member of Woodside Bible Church in Romeo, Michigan, where he worshipped. He also volunteered both there and with the Woodside Bible Church audiovisual team at the main campus in Troy, Michigan.

Steve is survived by his wife of 47 years Kathy, his sons Daniel and James, and his siblings Patricia Leitzel and George Hines. He was preceded in death by his mother, Catherine, father, Lawrence, and brother, David Hines.

A memorial service to honor Steve's life will be held at a future date. McMillan-Small Funeral Home in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, assisted the family with arrangements.

He leaves us too soon and will be greatly missed by all of us.

My sympathies to the family of Steve. I happened upon this simply searching and wondering where life had taken him. We worked together at the bank. I remember Steve exactly as described here: a kind-hearted soul.

I remember at one time discussing his military service and his work on military planes. We were chatting on how high they flew and I'd said well you can't see a lot from up there anyway. And Steve smiling and responding that I'd be surprised at just how much detail they can see down on the earth from up there. I have to wonder if he's seeing all of it from up there now. RIP Steve.

So sad to hear about Steve's death! My heart breaks for you and your sons! I'll always remember visiting you two in Alamogordo, NM and Romeo, many years ago. So fun Steve was! Hopefully we can connect soon Kathy! Our 50th class reunion was last Sunday, I had planned to attend, but got sick the day before. That's how the posting about Steve, on the program. Love Janine

Heartfelt condolences to Kathy, Dan and James. Steve was a remarkable brother-in-law. He will be remembered for always being willing to lend a helping hand and always with a smile on his face. He will be greatly missed by all our family and we are deeply saddened by this sudden loss.

We are deeply saddened at the loss of Steve. I have very fond memories of dropping the church bulletins round every Friday. Such a fabulous couple. Our prayers are for you Kathy and the family. Here if you need a hug.xx
