Steven Janko Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 2 to Mar. 7, 2021.
JANKO, Captain (ret.) Steven Eric DMD, FAGD, MAGD Age 70, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, February 24th, 2021 (12 Adar 5781), after a brave and brief battle with COVID-19 pneumonia. Steven was born in Elmont, New York on February 9th, 1951 to his predeceased parents Mortimer and Pearl Janko. Steven graduated from Marblehead High School in 1969, and earned Bachelor's degrees in Biology and Chemistry at the University of Maine in 1973. He continued his studies at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, graduating near the top of his class in 1976. Among his numerous academic and professional honors and accolades, his scholarship from the United States Air Force was his most cherished. After completing his active and reserve duty as a Captain in the USAF, he was honorably discharged in 1983 and founded a private dental practice in Hopedale, MA where he worked for 35 years. He was beloved by his staff and took immense pride in restoring the health and lives of thousands of appreciative patients during his career. He was a member of the American Dental Association and earned Fellow and Master certifications from the Academy of General Dentistry. He was a lifelong teacher and learner, lighthearted, friendly, and quick with a joke. He treated everyone with respect and compassion, and he was a generous and dedicated father. He inspired all who met him in many ways, but perhaps most notably with his indefatigable optimism despite the chronic health issues that plagued the final years of his life. He is survived and lovingly remembered by his beshert and wife of 20 years, Kathie Janko (nee Skelton), as well as his son Matthew Janko and his wife Katelyn, daughter Kristen Janko and her husband Michael Giuliano, step-son Daniel Allen and his wife Lindsay, step-son Michael Allen and his wife Natalie, grandchildren Charlie, Haley and Lucas, elder brother Gary Janko and his wife Myra, younger brother Lee and his husband Phillip Mullen, and his large extended family and many friends across the country, especially the Sacks, Iskowitz, Mard, Englander, Waymouth, and Weinstein families. The family would like to express gratitude and recognize the tireless efforts of the entire faculty and staff of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, especially the Hepatology and Transplant Surgery services, the nurses and staff of Farr 10, and the intensive care unit for their grace and compassion at the end of his life. Due to Covid-19, private Graveside Services will not be held. A celebration of Steven's life with military honors will be held at a later date. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association (alz.org) or the American Diabetes Association (diabetes.org). I was Dr. Steve's firearms instructor.
It took less than 5 minutes to become friends with him.
He brought a different and welcomed perspective to the class.
The world lost a great man.
My prayers go out to Dr. Steve and his family.

I’m so sorry to hear about Dr. Janko. I was one of his first patients at the time that Dr. Markarian retired. Steve was a wonderful and genuine person. My heart goes out to all of his family members and friends. Rest In Peace. In my prayers, Theresa M. Floyd

Kathy, I saw the post on class on 68 facebook page. I remember you as a quiet, lovely and fun classmate and am very sorry for the loss of your husband at an early age. It sounds like you have a large loving family to sustain you. Hope to meet up at the next reunion.

I am so sorry to hear of Dr. Janko's passing. He made going to the dentist a pleasurable event which is very difficult to do. His sense of humor and dental skills were unmatched. My husband (Alan Kolbe) and I have missed him since he sold his practice. Our condolences to his family. He loved you very much.

Dr. Janko was our family dentist for years. No one ever complained about having an appointment because the whole office was so welcoming and Dr. Janko made the experience fun and funny. Even our granddaughter Looked forward to her visits. We moved to Virginia eleven years ago and our new dentist commented on the dental work done by Dr.Janko, as some of the best he had seen. He was loved by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Sending our deepest sympathy to all.

Steve was my husband's best friend from the time they were 13, long before I met my future husband in college. They always had such fun together, and I, and later our children, were included in that warm circle. He was my friend too, and I will miss him!

I am so sorry to hear of Steve's passing. My husband was one of his patients for many years and they also bowled and played darts together.
When we got married, I became a patient as well. Steve was such a compassionate and caring dentist and always would have a joke at the ready. I remember him taking care of an emergency for Don on New Year's Day so he wouldn't have to go the weekend in pain. Keeping his family in our thoughts. May his memory be a blessing.

Kathie and Family,

I was deeply saddened to learn of the death of my old friend, Steve. We were colleagues for many years and the dental community has not only lost a wonderful dentist, but a good friend.
All who knew him recognized his dedication to his professioin, his paitents and his family. We are all better for having known Steve. I will miss him professionally, at lunch and on the golf course.
My sincerest condolences.

With all the wonderful things Steve has done for me in the last year, what I will always remember best were the wonderful warm, kind words he wrote to me in our H.S. Yearbook. God bless, Steve. B Positive!
