Stuart Preston Merrick Jr.

MERRICK, JR., STUART PRESTON, completed his life on Earth August 5, 2007. Preston was born February 26, 1942 in Birmingham, Alabama, the only son of Stuart Preston Merrick and Merrian Hinkle Merrick. A graduate of Florida State University with a degree in Chemistry, he enjoyed a 28 year environmental career, which culminated in his position as the Pollution Control Officer for Reedy Creek Improvement District, Lake Buena Vista, Florida. While he enjoyed his work, Preston was not defined by his career, as evidenced by his many other interests and hobbies. He was a Charter member of the Florida Analytical Society, an award winning Homebrewer, and an avid outdoorsman participating in hiking, backpacking, and archery. Preston was a self-taught musician, playing guitar and banjo, while passing his love and appreciation for music to both of his sons. He loved all types of music, with a special fondness for Bluegrass, and he participated in local bands and performances over the years. He served his country with honor in the 513th Military Intelligence for the U.S. Army, stationed in Obersual, Germany where he met and courted his future wife of 39 years, Betty Crane Merrick. Along with his wife, he is survived by their two wonderful sons, Stuart Preston "Trey" Merrick III, and Jordan Hunter Merrick. Preston loved being outside, particularly in the mountains, finding it spiritual, experiencing great calmness and serenity with nature. He was a wonderful husband and father, a loyal friend with great integrity. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Please contact funeral home for service time.
