Stuart Solomon Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Feb. 26, 2008.
SOLOMON, Stuart, M.D., passed away quietly at the McGuire Veterans Hospital in Richmond. He fought a long, tough, and courageous battle against cancer. Dr. Solomon grew up in El Paso, Texas where he briefly attended the University of Texas. He went on to receive a B.S. degree with honors from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Mass. He then studied at Carnegie-Mellon University where he received his M.S. in Metallurgical Engineering. He also served active duty in the United States Army at Fort Knox, Kentucky and in the United States Army Reserves with a medical unit in Boston, Mass. He was later awarded his M.D. degree at the Medical College of Virginia in 1969, where he was Chief Resident in Pediatrics in 1972. His list of honors and prizes dating back to high school, college, and medical school are too numerous to mention. He was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Society, the MIT Educational Counsel, and former President of Richmond Pediatric Associates, Inc. for over 20 years. His mind was "an interesting place in which to dwell." Although an active pediatrician for many years, he always was a mentor to students and continued to teach Introduction to Clinical Medicine until the week he was admitted to the hospital. He served on the staff of St. Mary's Hospital, Virginia Commonwealth University Hospital (Medical College of Virginia), Henrico Doctors' Hospital, Richmond Memorial Hospital and Stuart Circle Hospital. He was a member of the American Medical Association, the Richmond Academy of Medicine, as well as the Richmond Pediatric Society. Stuart is survived by his wife, Roberta Horne Solomon, who grew up in Boston, Mass. and now resides in Manakin-Sabot, Va. Survivors include his beloved daughter, Carrie Lee Sutherland; granddaughter, Jessica Lee Sutherland of Chesapeake, Va.; and his former son-in-law and good friend, Hinton L. Sutherland. Survivors also include his son, Scott M. Solomon, M.D. of Champaign, Illinois; and his two grandchildren, Andrew Solomon and Katherine Solomon, all of Champaign. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law, Sara Gregg Kent of Champaign, Illinois. Funeral services will be held 12 noon Wednesday at Temple Beth Ahabah, 1111 W. Franklin St., Richmond. In lieu of flowers, contributions should be sent to the M.I.T. Alumni Fund, 77 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge, Mass. 02139. This was Dr. Solomon's favorite college. He was very proud of their ongoing cancer research. No other contributions will be acknowledged by the family. Burial services will be private.

Dr. Solomon was a treasured member of our family community. From the time he became our pediatrician we felt comfortable with his clinical expertise and his warm and caring friendliness with our children. Over the years Dr. Solomon correctly diagnosed several unusual conditions in our children and gave expert care to our physically and mentally challenged son Donald. Our five children and several foster children all felt comfortable with his loving care and friendliness.
We are deeply saddened by his untimely death and will hold his family in our prayers.

He was my childhood doctor and I still remember that wonderful smile. I was never afraid to see him when I went to the doctor. I am so sad to hear that he has left us. He has touched so many lives, but I just wanted to mention that he also touched my life as well!!
Sending my love and prayers!

Dear Solomon Family,
I am truly saddened to hear of your loss. Dr. Solomon was my pediatrician, caring for me and my 2 brothers from birth until college. He inspired me to become a pediatrician, always taking time to speak directly to me as if my 8 year old opinion was as valuable as my mom's. He touched so many lives, and I'm proud and blessed to have known him. God bless you all in your time of bereavement.

I am sorry to hear about Dr. Solomon's passing. He was my pediatrician from birth to adult. He always made me smile and laugh when I saw him even when I was sick. He was so passionate about his patients and always listened to what the child had to say. It was fun to hear about the "birds" that you had in your ears. Dr. Solomon is the best doctor that any child could ever had have. I am so blessed to have had him as my doctor. I will never forget him, may his legacy live on forever. Thanks Dr. Solomon for everything that you did for me and your hundreds of other patients over the years, you will forever be missed! God bless!

Dr. Solomon was a brilliant man who shared his wisdom with each parent that visited with their children. He was so practical and constantly reminded us what a gift our children were. As a parent you were always confident of his diagnosis. Thank you Dr. Solomon

Dr. Solomon attended to our son soon after his birth at home. He was the only area pediatrician still attending to home birthed babies. We are thankful he was there for our family and will be forever appreciative.

Dr. Solomon was my children's pediatrician once we moved to Richmond and was able to help them so much with his knowledge of allergies. They loved going to him and he took so much time with them when I knew he didn't have the time to spare. He was dearly loved and missed. He was a fine doctor that I trusted and admired.
May God bless your family during this time and know how special Dr. Solomon was.

I am saddened at the loss of Dr. Solomon. He was the Pediatrician for my daughter, Victoria, back in the 70's. My Goodness! He was so good, kindly, jovial...all the good things you can say about a person, you could say about him! I always remember him with a smile! He made the world richer with his presence! May his soul rest in peace and may God Bless his family! Joan Marie (Sharp) Osborne

Dear Mrs. Solomon and family:
Stu was our children's pediatrician for several years until his retirement, and my wife and I always felt fortunate that our children were in his care. I personally enjoyed knowing Stu through our interactions at Tuckahoe Library, especially through our book discussions. Stu always had such a positive outlook on things, displayed a thoughtful, generous, kind, and gentle nature, and I feel my life was enriched by knowing him. He will be well and truly missed.

Dear Solomon Family,
Dr. Solomon touched many lives, including my family, as he was my children's first and favorite doctor. We'll always be grateful for the many ways Dr. Solomon blessed our family as he cared for our children. He was also a good teacher, reminding the med students shadowing him at Richmond Pediatrics to listen to the Mom. One day, when greeting my daughter and admiring her hair-do, Dr. Solomon exclaimed, "Oh, a Palm Tree Pony-tail!" For many years, we have enjoyed sharing that with other little girls who have similar hair styles.
We share in your grief, but also thank you for sharing Dr. Solomon with us. God gifted him with a love for children that he shared with all children. He was so kind and gentle.
You're in our prayers.

Dear Family,
I was so saddened and at a loss of words when I learned of Dr. Solomon's death. He was my pediatrician from the time I was a baby up into all of my young years. I remember him wearing these little animals on his ties to always try to make children smile when they had to come to the doctor. He was a wonderful and caring man and was a compassionate doctor. It will always bring a smile to my face when I hear his name. He will be greatly missed, but never forgotten. Your family will be in my thoughts and prayers.

The world has lost a very special person. I had the privilege of knowing Dr.Solomon 30 years ago when my children were little, and I always appreciated how down-to-earth he was, what a great sense of humor he had, and overall what a brilliant mind. I am so sorry for your loss, please accept my deepest sympathy.

My sympathies and prayers are with Dr. Solomon's family and friends. Dr. Solomon was my pedatrician when I was a child. He made going to the doctor such a fun experience. His character and personality was one that will truly be missed.
I remember seeing him about 5 or so years ago, in Toys R Us with his grandchildren. He still remembered me as a patient and he shared with me what joy his grandchildren had brought into his life.
I consider myself very fortunate to have known Dr. Solomon. He will be missed.
