Sue Register Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jul. 22 to Jul. 30, 2023.
Wilbur by the Sea - Sue Register, 81, of Wilbur by the Sea, FL, passed away peacefully at home on June 11, 2023. Born on March 10, 1942, in Fort Lauderdale, FL, Sue was the daughter of Mildred Pridemore McDavid and A.F. McDavid. She was preceded in death by her husband of 25 years, Don Register, her parents, her brother Don McDavid, her sister Carolyn Green, and brother Terry McDavid. She is survived by her daughter Susan Marteeny (Matt), her granddaughter Isabella Marteeny, her sister Brenda Whitehead (Henry) and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Sue's greatest joy in life was her family. She adored her daughter, Susan, her son-in-law, Matt, and had an incredibly special love for her granddaughter, Isabella. She embraced life as Isabella's YaYa. Sue shared her love of travel with them, taking them on many cruises and trips throughout Europe. She was happiest sharing the same destinations and adventures she visited with her husband. Her passion for travel influenced Susan's career as a travel advisor.

Sue attended Pompano Beach Elementary and High School until her family sold their dairy farm to the Pompano Park Raceway. They moved to Brooker, FL to build McDavid Farms where they raised world champion Quarter Horses & cattle. Sue graduated from Santa Fe High School, Alachua, FL in 1960. In high school, Sue was a member of the Homecoming Court, Vice President of the Student Council and Library Council, Secretary/Treasurer for FTA and participated in the Chorus, Science Club, and FHA. Sue then pursued higher education at Valdosta State University.

Sue initially worked for the McDavid Family-owned Columbia Livestock Market & Auction. She later worked at Belk Lindsey in Gainesville in sales and runway modeling. Sue transitioned to Gulf Life Insurance as an office manager. She met Don on a blind date and married him months later in 1973. In 1974, the family moved from Lake City, FL to Daytona Beach Shores where Sue started a remarkable 37-year career as a Personal Banker with Sun Bank. Sue was the Secretary for the Daytona Beach Shores Chamber of Commerce and Treasurer for several charities.

Though she initially aspired to become a teacher, life took her on a different path. After retiring, Sue found fulfillment in volunteering at Isabella's Chisholm Elementary School running The Wildcat Store and as Treasurer of the PTA until the pandemic.

Sue and Don enjoyed travelling the world. She loved the beach, boating, fishing, football and riding with Don in their dune buggy. They spent most of their life on the water. Sue found solace in gardening after the loss of her husband in 1998. She loved the mountains and waterfalls in Highlands, NC where she spent childhood summers at the family home. She maintained friendships in the area visiting frequently. Sue loved visiting all the Florida theme parks with her family, holding annual passes for 40 years.

Sue Register will be remembered as a loving mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend who gave selflessly and loved unconditionally. Her kindness and devotion touched the lives of many, and her legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew her. Her motto was Take the Trip and Wow, did she!

Sue's life will be celebrated through private memorial services for the family in Highlands, NC, Rhodes, Greece, and Paradise Island, Bahamas, where Sue and Don lived part time from 1988-1998. A future Celebration of Life will be planned for family and friends to honor Sue's memory.

Sue was a treasured member of the Chisholm Elementary Wildcat family. She touched so many little lives as she greeted them daily as they entered the Wildcat Store. The store was there to provide school supplies, incentives for good behavior and grades and as a clothing closet for children in need. Sue would celebrate each child and their success as if they were her own beloved Isabella. Sue came to Chisholm because of Isabella; she stayed because of her love for all of the children. To me, she will be remembered for her kind and loving heart, the great stories she shared about her family and travels, and her love and affection for Isabella, Susan and Matt. I am blessed to have known Sue and to have shared time with her.

Joe and I have such fun memories of your Sue. I was lucky to have had the fun of working with Sue at the bank. Everyone loved her and she charmed everyone around her. We had great times out with Sue and Don. Such a fun couple. I remember the time going out on the dune buggy with them. We laughed a lot. Sue was one of a kind.

She always would greet me every time she saw Evan and I with hugs and a big smile. She had a way of making us feel special and loved. I loved watching her love on Isabella and making the time to be fully present with her and Susan. I will miss seeing her at the beach and all the family friendly get together. I am lucky to have had her in our lives.
