Suresh Anand, M.D. Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Nov. 26 to Dec. 3, 2023.
Phoenix, AZ - 9/13/31 - 11/23/23 Suresh was born in Indore, India to parents Satchit and Sumran Bai. As a boy, he enjoyed helping in his father's medical practice, where his passion for medicine began. His dedication to pursuing a career in medicine resulted in his admission to medical school two years earlier than most and he graduated from King George's College in 1954. After completing his studies and an internal medicine residency in India, he moved to the U.S. in 1957, where he pursued a Master's in Medicine at the University of Colorado and then a fellowship in Chest Medicine at National Jewish Hospital in Denver. With his visa expiring and the need to pursue an internship in the U.S. or Canada, he moved to Toronto, Canada where he completed further training at Mt. Sinai Hospital. It was there he met his wife of almost 60 years, Wiltrud (Trudie). While in Canada, he began the fight against the unjust policy that prevented immigrant physicians of S. Asian descent from sitting for the medical board exams and thus qualifying to practice medicine independently. After three years in Canada, he and Trudie moved back to Denver, where he completed a fellowship in Allergy/Immunology. While there, he and Trudie welcomed their children, Miriam, in 1967 and Michael, in 1968. In 1969, the young family moved to Phoenix, where Suresh practiced Allergy/Immunology and founded his practice Allergy Associates and Lab, Ltd. in 1972, where he worked until retiring in 2020. He shared his love of medicine with multiple medical students and residents through preceptorships in Allergy/Immunology. He was nominated by his peers as a Phoenix Top Doctor in Allergy/Immunology numerous times and was honored to be listed in Who's Who in America.

He was known to have said, "my profession is medicine and my hobby is medicine". He dedicated his time by volunteering in support of physicians and their patients. He served on numerous boards, including the Maricopa County Medical Society (for which he was president in 2003), the Arizona Medical Association and the Arizona Foundation for Medical Care, but also was a member of the Phoenix Symphony Council and supported the Arizona Opera Company, Arizona Historical Society, and the Phoenix Art Museum. Although medicine was his first hobby, he had enjoyed other hobbies such as tennis, traveling and photography. He is survived by his wife, Trudie, daughter, Dr. Miriam Anand, and son, Michael Anand. I came to know about Dr. S Anand's passing after flying back from India this week. Dr. Anand was a very approachable, kind, and caring individual. I met him and his wife a few times at the AZ Foundation's annual party. How sad to know that he left all of us on Thanksgiving Day. Our deepest sympathies to the family. With Kind Regards, Bina & Sunil Jain

Dr Anand was very caring and quite thorough in his patient care. As a 35 + year patient of his along with a daughter who saw him as a teenager there was never any concern or question about the quality or amount of care which we received. He is certainly missed and I hope that the Anand family receives some solace in the very good memories which his former patients express.

I had been a patient of Dr. Suresh since I started attending ASU in 1976. I always trusted him and he cared for me like I was his most important patient as I'm sure he did for many. I remember him giving me a personal tour when he opened the office on Guadalupe. He was so proud! We laughed as I told him I'm sure I should have a portion dedicated to me as I spent so much time there and helped build it. He was such a kind, caring man, an outstanding doctor, and someone I considered my friend.

Dr. Anand was an amazingly gifted physician. At every appointment, he listened carefully to all my questions and answered with great care. He was always striving to address the concerns of his patients and worked hard to treat their individual needs. Dr. Anand made a huge impact in the world of medicine and will be missed. Rest in peace sweet friend.

I started going to Dr. Suresh Anand many years ago when his practice was located at the upside pyramid building in Scottsdale. I always liked him. He was an old-fashioned hands-on kind of doctor who reminded me of my childhood. I am so sad to hear about his passing. What is remarkable is how long he practiced medicine! What a long, useful, life. Thank you, Dr. Suresh for your many years of service to the allergy and asthma prone of Arizona! I will not forget your caring and your sensitivity.
