OBITUARY FOR SUSAN T. CLAPPER
On Thursday, March 23, 2023, Susan Terry Clapper loving wife of James R. Clapper Jr., mother, grandmother, and great-grand-mother, passed away at the age of 78.
Sue, as she was known, was born in Long Branch, New Jersey on May 29, 1944, the daughter of Rosemary and Larry Terry. An Army brat, she grew up in the environs of Ft. Monmouth where her dad was commissioned into the Signal Corps. She lived overseas in post-war Japan, and then moved with her family to Vint Hill Farms Station, VA in the late ‘40’s. It was here that she first met her future husband, Jim, whose Army family was also stationed there. After her dad retired from the Army, he worked for the National Security Agency as a senior civilian, and the family settled in Laurel, MD. Sue attended and graduated from Pallotti Catholic High School in 1962, attended the University of Maryland, and then worked for the NSA. Sue and Jim reunited in Laurel and were married at the Ft. Meade Post Chapel on April 24, 1965.
Jim and Sue served for over 32 years in the Air Force, retiring in September of 1995. They managed 23 moves during Jim’s career. Sue always kept the home fires burning, particularly during all Jim’s many absences from home, and was a major contributor to the successes he enjoyed during his career. She was a dedicated volunteer wherever she was stationed, often spending her time working in schools or striving to improve family life for military families. Sue was the epitome of service to country, her community and Jim, which continued during his subsequent 16 years as a civilian in the government.
Sue loved her family and since becoming a grandmother, freely abided by the first line in a grand-mother’s job description: “spoil the grandkids.” She was truly the matriarch of the family. She organized the annual family sojourns to the Outer Banks every summer for almost a quarter century. She loved being with family and watching the grandkids grow up.
Sue was also an ardent animal lover, and she doted on the family dog, Augusta, volunteered at the Fairfax County Animal Shelter, and donated freely to many animal causes. She was an avid gardener and birdwatcher and had room in her heart for all living creatures. Sue so positively touched so many, many lives during hers.
Sue is survived by her husband Jim, her two children, Jenni Coakley, Andy (Kim) Clapper, four grandchildren, Ryan (Hannah) Coakley, Erin Coakley, Mac Clapper, Colin Clapper, and great granddaughter, Kenna Coakley.
Funeral services and burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a date to be determined. Condolences can be sent to the family at The Colonial Funeral Home www.colonialfuneralhome.com
In lieu of flowers, donations in her honor may be made to an animal well-being charity of choice, and/or to the Parkinson’s Foundation www.parkinson.org

General Clapper,
I regret I did not get to know Sue, but there is no doubt that she positively influenced your life from the time your were Army brats in Northern Virginia, when you left your collection of Superman and Batman comics in her care when you could not take them with you due to weight restrictions on your Dad's PCS assignment. I believe she learned a lot about how to be a superhero and applied that during her career as your wife. I'm sure those of us who worked with you over the years also benefited from her wise council to you and we benefited not only from your natural talents, but also from receptiveness to inputs from subordinates and colleagues. Please know that my wife and I will stand (maybe with the occasional wobble?) to support you, and be thinking of you in your time of loss. From days at NIMA as a rotational from CIA.

Dear Director Clapper and family;
Please accept my deepest condolences on the passing of Sue. As one of your colleagues at the ODNI - and a neighbor - I had the honor to know Sue and you on a professional and personal basis. Sue was always a leader in the neighborhood and compassionate to all.
Take care; be strong; and know all of you are in our thoughts and prayers.

Dear Jim and extended family...Kitty and I extend our heartfelt condolences. Although we met Sue only once over all the years we have known you, we knew her to be everything described in her end-of-life story...and so much more. General Clapper and family, Sadly, we saw Sue's obituary in the 30 March Washington Post. We know what a major roll Sue played. Her love and support enabled you to tackle the tough jobs you shouldered. We can't imagine how hard it is to lose your best friend and soulmate after 67 years of marriage. I wish there was more we could say beyond we are truly sorry. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this very difficult time.

Jim, you were blessed with a remarkable partner. We feel blessed to have been a very small part of Sue's story as she shared her grace and kindness and generosity with all those, who worked with you during your military and civilian careers. You and your family have our prayers of sympathy.

General Clapper: I am so sorry to hear the passing of your wife Susan. I am glad I had a chance to meet her . . . at the Pentagon of course. I remember you telling her that you were thinking or retiring and she said " . . . no you don't because then you will be home with me." You chuckled. We will pray for her and we will pray for you. God bless.

Lt Gen Clapper, Ellen and I are sorry for the loss of Sue. She was your constant mate through your long career. As our paths crossed several times, starting in 1967, I had the pleasure of meeting Sue several times. She was always gracious and cordial. The Lord keep and sustain you as you continue on without Sue at your side.

We were saddened to read this news today and offer our thoughts and prayers for Sue, Gen Clapper, Jenni, Andy and the extended family. When I was serving as executive officer to then-Col Jim Clapper (1982-83), Sue was always so kind and supportive . When my wife, Olga, was at Walter Reed following surgery in 1995, Sue visited and brought her positive energy and encouragement. Her smile and grace warmed any room she entered. We wish the family quiet moments of peace and comfort during these difficult times. With deep respect, Jim and Olga Sullivan

I am so sorry to hear of Suzie's passing. Our family has been friends since they met in Hawaii in the mid-1970s. While we may have lost touch over the years, Suzie was always a bright light in the world. I have fond memories of our family visiting her parents when they were stationed in Cocoa Beach. We discovered peanut buster parfaits at Dairy Queen and I think of the Clapper family every time I go to Dairy Queen. Sending hugs and prayers to the entire family.
